And Down the Stretch They Come

South Bend, Ind - By this time tomorrow the smoke should all be cleared and the class of 2004 should be all in place for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. In less than 24 hours, recruits across the country will be signing and faxing their national letters of intent to their selected schools. Last year the Fighting Irish were only waiting for one more player to come when signing day rolled around, and his name was CJ Leak and we all know that saga. This year is every different however, with the Irish waiting on seven recruit's decisions.
As of now Notre Dame has 16 verbal commitments this season. The list is very solid with good talent all around. Of the 16, 2 are quarterbacks (Matt Lovecchio and Jared Clark), one is a running back (Vontez Duff), 4 are wide receivers (Lorenzo Crawford, Jovan Witherspoon, Ronnie Rodamer, and Omar Jenkins), two are tight ends (Billy Palmer and Jerome Collins), three are defensive linemen (Greg Pauly, Kyle Budinscak, and Jason Sapp), two are linebackers (Derek Curry and Mike Goolsby), and two are defensive backs (Preston Jackson and Garron Bible).
The seven remaining prospects include: Texas quarterback Carlyle Holiday, running back Reynaldo Works, offensive linemen Jeff Eulberg and Alex Barron, defensive lineman Anthony Crosson, line backer Ronbrose Jones, and safety/quarterback Abram Elam. Now I'll take a look at ND's chances at each.
First off, Carlyle Holiday. For the last two-three weeks it seems each day people are expecting an announcement. Well, what was thought to have ended two weeks ago wil now be decided tomorrow on signing day. He is down to Notre Dame and Nebraska and has been thorn over which was the better fit for weeks. This one is totally up in the air and no one really knows where he is going. My heart says Notre Dame all the way, but my head says it looks like Nebraska. ND's chance: 51%
Next comes Reynaldo Works who is stil officially commited to Oklahoma, but is waivering big time. He is strongly considering Notre Dame and likes the offense the Irish run. At Oklahoma, the quarterback and wide receivers are the bread and butter of the offense, while Notre Dame uses it's running backs a lot more which is enticing to a recruit. This one is far from over and by this time tomorrow I think you will be hearing the ND fight song out of the Works' house. ND's chance: 60%
As of now, no offensive linemen are commited to the Irish, but two are left on the board - Alex Barron and Jeff Euhberg. Barron is rated as one of the best offensive linemen in the country this year. He is down to Florida State, Georgia, South Carolina, Notre Dame, and Georgia Tech. I have no clue where he will end up since he hasn't said much of anything the entire recruiting season. For some reason though I don't like ND's chances here that much with them being the only non-South school on his list. ND's Chances: 25%
The other offensive linemen looking at Notre Dame is Jeff Eulberg. Euhberg does not come in with the nearly as many accolades as Barron but is a decent prospect. He got looks from some of the major schools like Michigan, but has really only gotten offers from the smaller schools. He is favoring Portland State because Notre Dame had not offered him yet, but an unconfirmed source has told me that they offerend him today. If Notre Dame has offerend him I think he will come. According to Lemming he would love to play for Notre Dame, and despite the low ranking and small attention that's the kind of kid you want playing for you. ND's Chances: 70%
Defensive line was a big area of need for Notre Dame this year and they addressed the area fairly well. Notre Dame needs a good defensive tackle however with all three other DL recruits wanting to play DE. Anthony Crosson is the only DL left on the board for Notre Dame and I think he will end up at Notre Dame. He is down to Notre Dame, Boston College, and Minnesota. I think it's really down to Notre Dame and Boston College. I think Notre Dame wins here. ND's chances: 70%
The Irish have already landed a stellar prospect in Mike Goolsby. Derek Curry became the second LB prospect to sign. It was a goal to land two linebackers this year and since it is possible that Goolsby could move onto the defensive line, there is always room for one more! Ronbrose Jones looks to be that 3rd LB grab. Ronbrose is a very good combination of size (6'3" 230) and speed (4.6). Notre Dame has a great shot at him and I think they win here. ND's Chances: 70%
ND has two DB prospects remaining on the board in QB/DB/ATH Abram Elam and DB Roshaun Israel whom the coaching staff has just offered. Israel is a decent player but was not widely recruited around the country. Brother Steve Israel (NFL) and Ron Israel (Notre Dame). The Irish could very well be the place for him. He probably would not become a major contributor until later in his career though. Abram Elam is a top notch player out of Florida who could really help the Irish. He made First Team All State and Miami appears to be ND's major competition. We'd be lucky to get him though. 75% Israel/35% Elam.
Stay tuned today as we find out where all of these players end up!
