Maurice Stovall, a 6-foot-6, 210-pound wide receiver from
Philadelphia (Archbishop Carroll) is among the nations elite prospects.
Stovall has been named to several All-America teams and more than 30 schools have offered
a scholarship.
Stovall has narrowed his choices to Virginia and Notre Dame and he'll announce his
decision at a Friday (Feb. 1) press conference.
Sources close to the situation are reporting that Stovall has already verbally committed
to Notre Dame and that the press conference on Friday will be for answering questions.
We caught up with Archbishop Carroll head coach, Dan Bielli and he shed some light on the
situation.
"First, I want to say that Maurice is the most exciting player I've ever
coached." Bielli said. "He's arguably the best player ever at Radnor.
Maurice is now 6-foot-6 and I've timed him at 4.36 in the forty-yard dash. This year he
intercepted 11 passes and ran four of those back for touchdowns. He also ran four punts
back for touchdowns."
What is it about Stovall that makes him an elite prospect?
"Obviously his size and there aren't very many players with his size that have 4.3
speed." Bielli said. "Maurice can still make cuts and make people miss. He times
the ball extremely well in the air and his practice habits are incredible."
His teammates love him. Maurice doesn't big time anyone and that's probably why everyone
in the school loves him.
We're a running team and Maurice didn't get the ball probably as much as he would have
liked but he never complained. Maurice is just a great person and he comes from a great
family."
Coach Bielli talks about the recruitment of his prized recruit.
"It's down to Virginia and Notre Dame. A press conference is being held on Friday
(Feb.1). If a decision has been made, I don't know about it.
Maurice's father is handling recruiting matters. I talk to Mr. Stovall at least once a day
and he keeps me in the loop.
The Virginia guys (coaches) are great people but if I had to pick right now, I'd say that
Maurice is going to Notre Dame. That's just the feeling I have."
If Stovall does announce for Notre Dame, he'd be the most prolific receiver to hit South
Bend since Tim Brown. Maurice is a difference maker type prospect that would see immediate
playing time.
