I'm going to do all of you Irish fans a big favor today.
This is a piece of advice that I only wish I would have been fortunate enough to hear many
years ago. Are you ready? Here it is. relax.
Yes, it's that simple. Relax.
The last week of recruiting is filled with more swirling rumors than the manuscript of a
junior staffer in the Clinton White House. Well, almost that many. The point is that you
will do yourself quite a favor by just sitting back and enjoying the ride. That's what
makes a recruiting day fun.
I, like many of you, spend my days listening to quotes from prized prospects like Lorenzo
Booker, Fred Matua, and Rhema McKnight. Every Notre Dame publication is filled with some
supposedly exclusive quote from each respective young man saying how much he loves Notre
Dame, Ty Willingham and all things Irish.
You know what? If you read a USC or Washington publication, you'll see that same player
spewing about the beautiful weather in LA or the great offense that the Huskies run. Like
all college team oriented publications, a certain positive slant is always in place.
Except in this one, of course. (wink, wink) That is to be expected.
The problem is that when you start buying into all the hype, all you are doing is setting
yourself up for disappointment. Remember Randy Moss, C.J. Leak, and, most recently, Shaun
Cody? Remember how mad you were on recruiting day when they signed somewhere else? Don't
let it happen this year. Don't let yourself be fooled that the current crop is no good
because one kid you had heard a rumor about went somewhere else.
Here's what you know for sure. The Irish will have great offensive and defensive linemen
in this class, the bread and butter of a successful football team. They will also have the
best playmaking wide receiver to come to Notre Dame since the days of Dawson and Mayes.
Those are the facts. Everything else will be icing on the cake and you'll enjoy February
6th a lot more if you view it that way. Between now and then. just relax.
