Notre Dame and the BCS

Notre Dame, Ind (UHND) - The 2nd BCS poll is out and the everyone is already starting to wonder if an undefeated Notre Dame team could not play for the national title. Well I got news for everyone - its way too early to worry about that. Notre Dame has four more games to win before we can speculate as to whether they might be on the outside looking in if they go 12-0. All Notre Dame should be worried about right now is Boston College since Boston College would like nothing more than to ruin another possible title season for Notre Dame.

If Notre Dame gets too caught up in worrying about the BCS, they will have nothing to worry about, because there are still 4 teams remaining on the schedule. While Rutgers and Navy are always taken care of, even when Davie was coach, Notre Dame still can't overlook either. Add in a Boston College team that is struggling and would be happy if they only game they won the rest of the way was against the Irish and a USC team that is making a push to the top 10 and its not exactly an easy road.

Now to switch gears and cover why everything will work out if Notre Dame wins out. There are a total of 5 teams combined ranked ahead of Notre Dame in the two polls (AP and Coach's) - Miami, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, Ohio State, and Georgia. Of those 5 only 1 is guaranteed to lose - the loser of the Miami-Virigina Tech game. However, None of them exactly have easy roads ahead of them.

This weekend alone there are 4 games that could push Notre Dame up in the polls (assuming Notre Dame beast Boston College). First off, Oklahoma, #1 in the BCS, has a match up this weekend when they host #12 Colorado. Colorado has rebounded after a slow start again this year and just ask Nebraska how dangerous Colorado can be at the end of the season. If Colorado pulls the upset, Oklahoma would drop below Notre Dame in the polls and Notre Dame would most likely be pushed up to #2 in the BCS since only Miami and Oklahoma are ahead of ND in the only poll that really matters.

Next up Virginia Tech hosts Pittsburgh. Pitt has a tough defense and are excellent against the run - remember what they did to Notre Dame's running attack? Virginia Tech's strength is their running game powered by Lee Suggs and Kevin Jones. If the Panthers can contain Suggs and Jones and make Virginia Tech beat them passing, they could pull the upset this weekend. Pitt also has something to prove since they are 6-2 and have four teams with three losses ahead of them in the polls. Pitt is sitting outside the top 25 while Florida State, Tennessee, Penn State and Iowa State. The main reason Pitt isn't getting any love from the pollsters is because they haven't beaten any top 25 caliber teams. While their only 2 losses have comes at the hands of Texas A&M and Notre Dame by a combined 10 points - they still have no real quality wins. A win this weekend could push the Panthers into the top 20.

Possible upset #3 this weekend comes from Ohio State. Ohio State plays host to 7-1 Minnesota. Glen Mason has the Gophers at 7-1 and inside the top 25 (#23 in the AP and #19 in the coach's). Minnesota is a quality team very capable of taking down a Buckeye team that is coming off a tough, hard fought victory over Penn State last weekend. Added into the mix that Muarice Clarett is listed as probable and you have the makings of a Gopher upset.

The fourth game would hardly have been listed as an upset at the beginning of the season and most people would have thought that Georgia and Florida would be in reverse positions. As it is, Georgia sits undefeated at 8-0 and ranked #5 in the AP and Coaches polls and #4 in the BCS rankings while Florida is #22 in the Coach's poll and not ranked by the AP with a 5-3 record. Florida is up against the wall and needs a win to salvage it's season. The rest of Florida's games are winnable starting with this weekend when they travel to Georgia before visiting Vanderbilt and hosting South Carolina before their season ending matchup with Florida State. A win would put them back on tack and would also let them spoil the title hopes of a fellow SEC team.

So there you have it. We didn't even get past this weekend and there are four games that could easily move Notre Dame up in the polls. If the Irish take care of business they could be sitting at #2 in the BCS as early as Monday. If they don't and they get too caught up in the hype, they could be thinking about what could have been. My point by rambling on about the games this weekend? Don't worry about where Notre Dame is ranked now, worry that they win out and everything else will fall into place. I man honestly, how in the world would an unbeaten Notre Dame team ever not play for the national title when their turn around is the story of the year?
