The term 'recruiting coordinator' can be defined in many ways. Many of my closest friends in the coaching profession have held this title and their job descriptions varied greatly.

At one time, as all of you know, it was actually the tenth position on a college coaching staff. But in the not-too-distant past, the N.C.A.A. eliminated the position as an extra member to the coaching staff.

I often wonder where the American Football Coaches Association was when this happened.   Probably playing a little golf in Waco, Texas at their world headquarters.  I never understood how the N.C.A.A. could promptly put in jeopardy the livelihood of so many people.  Please don't get me started.

Let's look at the ways a recruiting coordinator could be used by a head coach.

Vinny Cerrato - Actually a counted member of the coaching staff. Coach Holtz coached with one less coach in order to allow Vinny to go on the road and recruit as well as evaluate. To leave campus, you had to be one of the counted coaches. Vinny was the best at his role. He recruited and evaluated as well as anybody. I was always asked if there was a problem between Vinny and I. This was while I was at Michigan.  The answer is unequivocally NO. We are friends to this day and I always respected his work. He was actually involved in my coming to N.D.

Bill Rees - Absolutely one of the finest people in the coaching profession. A pro in every sense of the word. Although carried as a coach at times, Bill was the consummate organizer. He was a prototype R.C. He put it all together; from weekends to staff travel. Bill did it all.  He will be an N.F.L. G.M. one day, count on it.

I, on the other hand, was a combination of both. I recruited, evaluated, and also coached the tight ends at Notre Dame. So as you can begin to see, the position can change from staff to staff.

The N.C.A.A. needs to respect the position and place it back as the tenth spot on the coaching staff. I sincerely believe this would improve recruiting from every standpoint, for all schools.
