NFL Irish Draft Summary
UHND.com  - Ryan Galles
5/3/2002

This was another successful year for the Irish in the NFL Draft, with 6 of the seniors getting drafted and three of the four captains getting drafted.  Among all the seniors, the three captains that will be with NFL teams are Anthony Weaver who went to the Ravens, Rocky Boiman to the Titans, and David Givens to the Patriots. The other seniors that were drafted were John Owens, Tyreo Harrison, and Javin Hunter. Hopefully these players will bring the NFL teams some good luck and help them out in the future.

Anthony Weaver-Baltimore Ravens

Anthony Weaver, captain of the 2001 Irish team, was selected by the Baltimore Ravens and will be a great asset to have. His leadership, toughness and determination will all work to make him the best player he can be. Weaver the 2001 Notre Dame MVP and also a four-year starter should see playing time soon
with the Ravens. Anthony was not available for an interview.

Rocky Boiman-Tennessee Titans

Boiman, another 2001 captain, played a great role in the Irish defense.  He came to Notre Dame as a free safety, but then after realizing that he might not play at all there, he quickly made a very successful change to linebacker. The Tennessee Titans will have a linebacker with experience in more than one position and in the future you might see him playing at free safety again.

John Owens-Detroit Lions

Tight end John Owens led the Irish in receiving as a tight end and had one of the best seasons in his career in 2001.  John, who is a good receiver in key situations, also was one of the teams best blocking tight ends. Detroit will easily find a key role for him, but it might be blocking for the QB rather than catching TD passes.

Tyreo Harrison-Philadelphia Eagles

Tyreo who will be a great loss to the Irish defense went to the Eagles, and hopefully give them the talent he gave Notre Dame. At Notre Dame, Harrison was a starter in all 11 games and led the Irish in tackles for his first time. He will graduate from Notre Dame with a degree in finance.

Javin Hunter-Baltimore Ravens

Javin Hunter, a great receiver and multi-dimensional player, will leave Notre Dame with a degree in Economics. He played key roles in the Irish offense as a receiver, rusher, and even at sometimes a passer. He will bring good receiving qualities to the Ravens next year and in years in the future.

David Givens-New England Patriots

Givens, who went very late in the draft, is just satisfied in being picked.  David, one of the four Irish captains, was used very successfully in the Irish special teams as a kick blocker and kick returner. He can also be used as a receiver, and as a last resort, don't be surprised if he turns out to be a running back for the Super Bowl Champions.
