At 6:46pm South Bend time, I got the official call from Chinedum Ndukwe.
"I am done faxing all the schools and I want to tell you I have verbally committed to
Notre Dame," Ndukwe said from his home in Powell, Ohio.
"When I met with coach Willingham on Monday he expressed to me that I was one of the
guys they wanted," Ndukwe said. "That's what I really wanted to hear. I want to
be part of what they're trying to build. I can't think of a better place to spend the next
four years."
So Chinedum Ndukwe becomes the second member of the recruiting class joining David
Marrero. Now the Irish have a big receiver to go along with a speedy running back.
As a junior, "Nedu" as he is called, had 59 receptions for over 800 yards and
scored 13 TD's.
Nedu told me what the moment was like when he committed to Notre Dame on Monday.
"I met with Coach Willingham for about an hour with my family," Nedu said.
"I was making it clear that I liked Notre Dame and Coach said, 'Is this a
commitment?' He reached over the desk as I said yes and he shook my hand and said,
'Welcome to the family.'"
"My mom cried, my dad was so happy - he's been right by my side the whole time,"
Nedu said. "I was so happy, but the happiest moment for me was when the written offer
came in the FedEx mail."
Let me just say what a joy it was to talk with Nedu and his dad, Stephen, tonight. They
have a wonderful family. Nedu's oldest brother, Kelechi, just graduated from Notre Dame
and is currently at the Navy chemical engineering nuclear power school in South Carolina.
Ike is another brother of Nedu's and he plays offensive line at Northwestern.
Nedu's little sister, Gracie, will be a freshman in high school and she just attended a
leadership camp at St. Mary's. Nedu's mother and father are Stephen and Nnenna.
Now what about Nedu's friend and teammate Quarterback Brady Quinn?
"Brady can't wait to get down there to see Notre Dame," Nedu said. "I
believe he wants to be part of it. I think if the talks go well and they offer, he'll come
with me. He's one of my best friends, I hope they offer, but he has to do what's best for
him.
Nedu told me that his family will probably go out and celebrate with a nice dinner and
there might be a shopping spree to his favorite store, The Finish Line. But his dad,
Stephen, said that they won't get to crazy because they didn't raise their kids that way.
Finally, Nedu shared a story with me from when he went to the Stanford summer camp and
Coach Willingham was still the coach there.
"Right before lights out," Nedu said. "Coach Willingham came down and sat
down for 40 minutes and just talked with us. There were no cameras there or anything, he
just talked with us. He seems so down to earth. I'm so blessed," Nedu said.
"Tyrone Willingham is one of the greatest people I've ever met."
