Post Game Report Card: Maryland

Quarterback:
Carlyle Holiday looked like a completely different quarterback out there tonight
than last season. Gone was the run first, option style QB and in was the
pocket comfortable, west coast QB. While there were a few mental mistakes,
I pray I never see him hurl a ball in the air as he is getting tackles again
like he did in the second half, he has made enormous strides and will only get
better as the season progresses. He had a few nice runs, but ran only when
he had too. The most impressive thing to me was his accuracy and his
composure. He was 17 of 27 with about 5 of those incompletions being throw
aways when no one was open. He was comfortable in the pocket and commanded
the offense. He should be fun to watch as the season progresses and he
gets more and more comfortable in the system.
Grade: A- (minus for the throw away)
Runningbacks:
The running game was not where it needs to be tonight. Maryland has a good
run defense, but the runningbacks didn't get much of anything going. There
weren't many broken tackles and there weren't many big gains. Ryan Grant
was not attacking the line of scrimmage as he had last season in his limited
action. He was more tentative out there tonight. He needs to think
less and react more and explode to the line. The experience is low, but
the talent is here. I would like to see the RB's involved more in the
passing game though. It was also nice to see the FB get a few
carries. The runningbacks need to do better next week.
Grade: C
Wide Receivers:
Wow, I forgot what it was like to see a receiver catch the ball in stride and
get yards after the catch. Arnaz Battle looked GREAT out there
tonight. We finally got a glimpse of the game breaking ability he
has. He needs the ball in his hands as much as possible. Omar
Jenkins also made a few nice receptions. The snare that Carlos Campbell
made late in the 2nd quarter was also very nice. Rhema McKnight and
Maurice Stovall both has auspicious first catches since it appeared both may
have fumbled them away after getting hit. Stovall is a HUGE target though
and needs to see the ball. Jared Clark made a nice catch as the tight end
caught two passes which would triple their production rate from last season at
that rate.
Grade: A
Offensive Line:
Holiday had all day to pass the ball and Maryland only got pressure on him when
they blitzed, their front four got no pressure on him without extra help.
The run blocking still needs some work however. Part of the problem was
the running backs, but there also weren't huge holes for the backs to run
through. This is a problem that needs to be worked on. Pass blocking
was good, but run blocking was suspect. Faine was laying people out though
and looks like he's gotten even better. He has All American written all
over him this season.
Grade: C+
Defensive Line:
The line had a good push all game. The front four got pressure on the
Maryland QB's without the need for extra blitzers. Cedric Hilliard looks
like he finally ready for the break out season we have all be waiting for.
Hilliard clogged up running lanes all night and was a large reason the Maryland
running game never got going. Ryan Roberts made a nice play on third down
on a option play in the first half was well. The line played great and
showed it will be a strength of the defense this season.
Grade: B+
Linebackers:
Courtney Watson sat out with an illness but Brandon Hoyte filled in fine for
him. Mike Goolsby was flying around the ball tonight as well. The
linebackers played a good game and kept the Maryland tightend out of the passing
game most of the night. Jerome Collins came in and made a few nice stops
against the run. With Watson in, this group will only get better.
Grade: B
Secondary:
Vontez Duff and Shane Walton were excellent at the corners. Walton started
his season off with a bang with 3 INT's. The safeties were very strong
against the run and came up and defended the option well. Preston Jackson
saw his first real playing time and looked promising. He is a small guy,
but looked like he has good instincts and could cover. The secondary in
general looked great and limited the Maryland offense to 113 yards
passing. If Walton continues this kind of play he will be playing on
Sundays next season and could gain some attention for post season All American
teams - 3 picks in 1 game is definitely a nice start.
Grade: A
Special Teams:
This unit played excellent outside of one long kick return. Setta had 5
field goals, Hildbold was strong when he has to punt, and Duff lead a strong
return game with his 76 yard punt return for a TD. Special teams can be
the difference in a game and Notre Dame definitely were today. Setta
looked excellent out there. His only miss came from 56 yards and even that
nearly made it. He started a strong campaign for Lou Groza award
consideration tonight.
Grade: A+
Coaching:
Wow, what a difference a year makes. This coaching staff had the team
prepared. They had their players in position to make plays. The
offense is light years ahead of what we saw last year. The defense was
kept guessing all game long. There was passing on first down, there were
plays for the fullbacks and tight ends, there was penetration by the defense
live. Overall, the staff did a hell of a job getting this team ready and a
hell of a job getting the offense acclimated to the new system. I know its
only one game, but its hard not to be excited after a start like that.
