Notre Dame paid tribute to the city of Boston and all of those affected by the tragic events during Monday’s Boston Marathon yesterday during the 84th annual Blue-Gold game by wearing a special decal on the back of their helmets.

The iconic Notre Dame helmet sported a new look this weekend and this time it wasn’t a crazy design or anything like that. ¬†Notre Dame placed green shamrock decals with a blue and yellow Red Sox-style “B” inside to pay tribute to the city of Boston after the week of turmoil the city endured.

Notre Dame’s helmets have have often been a hot topic among Notre Dame fans – usually by voicing their displeasure over new designs for the Shamrock Series games – but the addition of the sticker for Boston is something that all Notre Dame fans can agree was simply a great showing of support for a city that suffered so much over the last week.

Notre Dame has a lot of history with the city of Boston given the rivalry with Boston College and Saturday’s tribute to the city was a great gesture by the University for a great city.

A lot of teams and schools showed their support for Boston over the last week including the Yankees playing “Sweet Caroline” – a Red Sox game staple – during a game last week.

Boston College, meanwhile, was unable to hold their annual spring game this weekend due to the manhunt that lasted into the late evening hours on Friday and had the city of Boston on lockdown for much of the day.  Given the uncertain status of the search for the suspected bomber as of Friday afternoon, Boston College made the correct call to cancel their spring game.
