The Best Way to Bowl Watch

(Photo: Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports)

College bowl season is the best time of year. It serves as the last hurrah for football fanatics desperate to get one last fix before seven-to-eight months of nothingness, casting a void that no amount of game replays can fill. With stakes so high it becomes paramount that every last ounce of football is squeezed out of the precious few weeks remaining, and thankfully my best friend and I have developed a method for doing so. Years ago as undergrads we relaxed at a bar over holiday break, catching up and having a few cold ones in the process. While ...

The first week of the 2013 college football season is in the books, and already we’ve seen big upsets (Eastern Washington over Oregon State, anyone?), dizzying last-minute twists and turns (Ole Miss fans might still be out celebrating that win over Vanderbilt), and clashes of the titans that lived up to the hype (ditto Clemson fans after squeaking past Georgia). “Ah, what could be better than having college football back in my life?” you might wonder. Answer: winning prizes because college football is back. Here’s how you can do it: register for Transamerica’s Johnny Unitas College QB Challenge, featuring the top 30 contenders ...

College Football Season is Upon Us

Bennett Jackson - Notre Dame CB

This year’s college football season is here, and football fans couldn’t be more excited(and relieved). The BCS championship game feels light years away, and seeing how the Spring and Summer have brought nothing but grief to Irish fans, and are happily ready to move forward. The NBA and NHL seasons are long gone, and Major League Baseball is entering  its final few months, and quite frankly none of those sports excite us like the college football season does anyways. It has become a season that feels like it never ends, but there is a part that tends to drag unmercifully ...

Jeff Samardzija, Chicago Cubs Opening Day Starter

Jeff Samardzija - Chicago Cubs Opening Day Starter

Former Notre Dame All-American wide receiver Jeff Samardzija’s decision to pursue a career in baseball over football continues to look like a wise decision seven years later after the Notre Dame great was named the opening day starter for the Chicago Cubs over the weekend. Samardzija successfully converted to a starting pitcher last year after spending the first six years of his professional career as a reliever.  After a few bumps along the way, Samardzija had a strong second half before getting shut down in September because of an innings restriction placed on him by the coaching staff. During the ...

I go away for work for one day and Notre Dame decides to shake up the college sports world by announcing they will be joining the ACC for all sports other than football and hockey starting as early as 2014. Before we get into any analysis or quotes from University officials, lets get the details out of the way.  With this new agreement with the ACC, Notre Dame will leave the Big East and become a member of the ACC in all sports other than football, which will remain independent, and hockey, which the ACC does not have. Former Notre Dame All American wide receiver Jeff Samardzija was sharp in his 2012 season debut for the Chicago Cubs tossing 8 2/3 innings before giving way to Carlos Marmol for the final in the Cub’s first win of the season. Samardzija, once the owner of many of the Notre Dame receiving records that Michael Floyd has since staked claim to, made the Cubs rotation out of spring training for the first time in his career and he rewarded the Cubs with the best start of his career.  In fact, had it not been for a fielding error with two ...

Big 12 Making Last Stand

ESPN reported on Sunday that the Big 12 is making a final stand by trying to convince Texas and other schools looking to leave the conference to stay in the conference which would now be reduced to 10 teams. Such a move would all but kill any talk of Notre Dame having to abandon it’s long standing independence in the near future ESPN’s Joe Schad reports: Beebe (Big 12 Commissioner) has been told the loss earlier this week of Nebraska to the Big Ten and Colorado to the Pac-10 could diminish the value of the Big 12 by as little ...
