(UHND.com) — Darrin Walls picked Notre Dame this morning over Florida, Pitt, and Michigan giving Notre Dame 19 verbal commitments in this young recruiting season. Walls picked the Irish a week after his Florida visit and two weeks before his visit to Notre Dame for the USC game.

When Walls, a 6’0”, 180 lb cornerback, set his announcement date before his visit to Notre Dame, it sent many Irish fans panicking. Walls had seen Notre Dame already though and it appears he picked the Irish before his visit to be another recruiter on the field for the USC game which will feature many top recruits.

This is a HUGE commitment for Notre Dame. Walls comes in as Rivals.com’s #1 corner prospects and Scout.com’s #7 corner. He is on virtually everyone’s top 100 list and along with Raeshon McNeil, gives the Irish a cornerback duo unlike they’ve seen in years.

Walls is a prime time talent who could play as a true freshman with his size an ability. At 6’1” with a 4.4 40 time, he has the size and speed you look for in a corner.

This commitment should complete the Notre Dame recruiting effort in the secondary with Walls and McNeil at corner and Sergio Brown, Jashaad Gaines, and Leonard Gordon at safety. If it does indeed end recruiting in the secondary, the Irish couldn’t be happier with the way its turned out.

The Irish have two legit, big time cover corners in McNeil and Walls and have player makers at the safety position especially with Brown who has corner speed with safety size.

Getting Walls to commit before the USC game is also key because it gives Notre Dame a top rated recruit on the field to talk with all the other highly rated prospects that will be visiting Notre Dame that weekend.

As this weekend is shaping up, it could be one of the most important for Notre Dame football in some time with the top ranked Trojans coming into South Bend against a much improved Irish team than what they’ve seen in recent years. On the recruiting side, there are going to be enough blue chip recruits visiting that could push Notre Dame to the mythical recruiting title.
