It was made official earlier today that Gary Gray, a 5 star cornerback out of South Carolina, has verbally committed to Notre Dame. Gray is the 2nd five star commitment for the Irish this season after de-committing from South Carolina earlier this season and re-opened recruiting.

Defending the pass has been a problem that has reoccurred for the Irish for the past few years, and just when we thought it was gone, it reared its’ ugly head on Saturday afternoon.

Adding Gray will not add much size to the secondary, as he stands at 5’11 and just 170 pounds, but it will add some speed and play making ability. It will also give the Irish another potential shut down corner, as Gray is recognized throughout the country to be one of the best in one on one coverage and shutting down a big play receiver when called upon.

With a somewhat rebuilding year taking place next season in South Bend, Gray should see a ton of valuable playing time on special teams and on defense as well. The commitment of Gray gives the Irish three very solid corners for the future in Darrin Walls, Raeshon McNeil, and Gary himself. With an offense that has the likes of Jimmy Claussen, Duval Kamara, James Aldridge, and possibly an amazing receiver who goes by the name of Benn, getting the defense stronger is priority #1 for Charlie Weis at this point. So far, so good.
