I agree... a four team playoff will suck because....

It will consist of 2-3 SEC teams , a once or twice beaten USC and an occasional deserving squad dictated by ESPN in late October. Regular season wins over USC will be meaningless because they are perceived to be better than everyone else in the PAC-12 by the media and by virtue will have "earned" the right to play for the title.

It needs to be an 8 team playoff... six conference champs and let all the others play in for the final two spots. The mid majors have a an extra play-in game if they don't want to fine... don't complain about not getting a shot at the NC. Drawback... ND is likely forced into a conference (probably inevitable moving forward anyway).

If you can't win your conference you can not complain about not being selected as the best team in the nation... even if you hail from the mighty SEC or have porn stars on your turf at o-dark thirty. Alabama didn't even win their DIVISION last year, then was rewarded with an extra week of preparation to get ready for LSU who had to win the SEC title game that same week to earn a rematch with the Alabama squad they already beat... WTF? Mulligans for football teams is way pussy.

An eight team playoff gives everyone a shot at the National Title every season, keeps the regular season meaningful, allows conferences to determine champs however they like (except mid-majors... but beggars can't be choosers, seeding gives the inherently superior SEC team a slight edge and most importantly removes politicking (ESPN and coaches) from determining the outcome like they do now.
