Notre Dame is playing tonight with names on their jerseys for the first time since the 1988 (1987 season) Cotton Bowl.   While this is the first time in 21 years since names have appeared on the Notre Dmae jerseys, this used to be a tradition during Ara Parseghian’s tenure as head coach.  Under Ara, the Irish would not have names on the back of their jerseys during the season, but would for bowl games.

Players get to keep their jerseys from bowl so this is another nice way for them to end the year.

It was a nice change to see the names on the jerseys. There is so many new players getting some playing time its hard to know who your watching at any one time. I understand why they do not have names on their jersey, but now that I have had a taste of what its like with names on there, I think I kinda like it and wouldn’t mind the change being permanent

I dont like the name on the jerseys on a general basis. For the bowl game is OK. But for regular season, its the name on the front of the jersey that matters not the name on the back. Every man on the team should go out and play for the team.

That is what makes ND who they are, we don’t put names on our jerseys, no player is more important than another and no player is more important then the team. I was in shock, that is as bad as if the Yankees were to put their names on the back of their jerseys.

The names on the jerseys were done during the Faust era. More and more Weis is simulating the Faust era.

This was just a one time thing to give the team a treat for making a bowl game, stop overreacting!!!!

Yes - they did under Dan Devine. I’m not a fan of the names of the jerseys but don’t mind for the bowl game. Keep the TRADITION alive. Nice playing Irish.

Names on the back of jerseys are unneccessary! That’s why there are numbers, to identify the players.

NO ONE can read the tiny name anyway. Also, without names the school can save money by reusing the jersey year after year.

Having the names on there back brought back some memories of the old Irish players such as Clements, Gatewood, Weber, Browner, Townsend ect. We still have to improve which I think we will, Go Irish.

NO! We are a team which means that we dont do this indivisually. There is no “I” in team hence the reason for no names on the back showing indivuality.
