Irish Might be Minus Another Tight End This Weekend

Charlie Weis announced on Tuesday that Will Yeatman would be held out of competition until there is a resolution with his underage drinking arrest from last weekend which left Notre Dame with just three scholarship tight ends.  Thursday he announced they might be minus another tight end with junior Luke Schmidt experiencing some problems with headaches this week.

He’s getting a cognitive test today which is the things we make them do when guys are getting head aches and stuff like that to see what their status is.  When you get a cognitive test you either get cleared to play or you don’t get cleared to play.  He’s been taking different medicines and things like that, but his headaches have not cleared up.

When asked if he practice at all this week and if he could play this weekend without practicing.

Nope.  He didn’t practice today either.

Knowing what to do is one thing, practicing it is something else.

Losing Schmidt would leave the Irish extremely thin at tight end – freshmen Kyle Rudolph and Joseph Fauria. Weis said Thursday that there were come contingency plans though.

I’ve had all sort of people politicking me now.  We’ve practiced Joseph (Fauria) a whole bunch.  We have our cast of characters that we use because we use Asaph (Schwapp) and Steve Paslorz in a move tight end capacity similar with what we did with Luke.  You take your regular fullbacks and you put them in that similar role right there.  Of course, I’ve had a whole entourage of guys wanting to be the next two way player.  Paddy Mullen, Pat Kuntz, John Ryan, Brian Smith.  There’s a lot of guys that want to be that guy.
