Corey Robinson Commits to Notre Dame

The momentum that started on Saturday with the commitments of Colin McGovern and Hunter Bivin continued on Tuesday when Corey Robinson, the son of former NBA legend David Robinson, became the 9th commitment for the class of 2013 and the 6th from this past weekend’s junior day.

Robinson, a 6’4″, 195 lb receiver from Texas, is the second wide receiver commitment in the class along with Minnesota native James Onawalu and ninth commitment overall in the class of 2013.  He visited this past weekend for junior day and like five other weekend visitors, that trip was enough to get him to commit to Brian Kelly and the Irish.

Notre Dame was the first school to offer Corey Robinson a scholarship.  The Admiral’s son has only played football for three years and still is a bit raw but in terms of fitting the profile of an outside receiver in this offense, Robinson fits it to a tee.  He’s got great height and athletic ability with a frame that will fill out more with some time in the weight room with Paul Longo.

Just as a reference, Robinson’s father was 6’7″ coming out of high school before growing an additional 6 inches while adding 60 lbs during his time at Navy.  According to the San Antonio Express, the younger Robinson has already grown 6 inches since his freshman year of high school.

In a relatively short time frame Robinson has gone from an under the radar recruit to a rising prospect thanks to impressive performances at the Army All American combine in January and the recent Nike Camp in Dallas.  While Notre Dame was the first to offer him a scholarship, Wake Forest, Kanas, North Carolina, and Iowa have recently followed suit with the likes of Stanford starting to show interest.

Robinson wasn’t looking to commit this early since his recruitment was just starting to heat up, but the weekend trip to South Bend was enough to get him to commit jump on board according to what he told Irish Illustrated.

“There was something about it. I can’t explain it,” Robinson told Irish Illustrated late Tuesday. “Me and my dad and my mom, we were just praying about it. We just felt that the Lord gave us a lot of peace when we went on that campus, peace about Notre Dame.

“I did not see a reason to wait if I had that peace about it.”

Robinson is the kind of tall, physical wide receiver that Notre Dame was unable to land last year making his commitment this early a welcomed addition to the class of 2013.

Hopefully Notre Dame is able to get Robinson back on campus for a game this season – one with a lot of big time recruits that would be impressed by the presence of his 7 foot Hall of Fame father on the sidelines.  Even if that isn’t the case, this is a great addition for Notre Dame’s class as Robinson is realy just scratching the surface of his potential.

There isn’t much film of Robinson out there but there was some footage on Rivals/Yahoo showing Robinson in some one on one drills (shown below).

With Corey Robinson in the fold, Notre Dame has now added 6 different commitments since Saturday – an influx of commitments unlike anything I can remember since we have been running UHND. Robinson joins McGovern, Bivin, OL Mike McGlinchey, QB Malik Zaire, and CB Rashard Kinlaw.
