Initial Impressions – Notre Dame 24, Wake Forest 17

Notre Dame’s first trip to Winston-Salem ended with a win in an up and down performance that showed once again that the 2011 Fighting Irish are still very much a work in progress. Here are some initial thoughts from the game. Offense Tommy Rees didn’t have a very strong performance.  He was not very accurate [...]

(Not So) Initial Impressions – Notre Dame 31, #15 Michigan State 13

This weekend I had to catch the Irish using the NBC Notre Dame central app while at a wedding making any comments regarding the Irish and their performance a little difficult.  A day after making the long trip home I was able to catch the full game replay courtesy of and have some impressions [...]

Finding Some Positives from the Opener

Finding Some Positives from the Opener

It’s been about 36 hours since Notre Dame’s season opener ended with a thud and while the loss still stings it’s time to move on and start looking towards where the Irish go from here.  With that in mind, here are several positive performances and bright spots in an otherwise disappointing display from the Irish [...]

The Indispensables – 2011 Edition

With just over two days remaining until the 2011 season kicks off for Notre Dame, we take a look at our yearly pre-season list of the most indispensable players on the Irish roster. I started this column last year and unfortunately Notre Dame lost four of the ten players I listed for a substantial amount [...]

For the second year in a row, UHND will be participating in a countdown of the top 25 players on the Notre Dame roster.  Last year was a lot of fun and this year we’ve improved the process and should have some great posts to read across all of the ND sites participating. First off, [...]

8 Now or Never Players for 2011

8 Now or Never Players for 2011

Heading into fall camp every year there are a number of players who face now or never type seasons.  Maybe they are coming off on an injury.  Maybe they just haven’t cracked the starting lineup yet.  Maybe they were recruited over and now have to fight off some hot shot freshman for playing time. Whatever [...]

Initial Impressions – Notre Dame 20, USC 16

THE STREAK IS OVER.  Despite losing the turnover battle 4-1 and playing half of the game in a driving rain storm, Notre Dame ended USC’s 8 year winning streak over the Irish and capped off a roller coaster regular season on a high note. I’ll get into my normal post game comments in a bit, [...]

Initial Impressions – Notre Dame 27, Tulsa 28

Wow.  I don’t think anyone imagined 11 months ago when Brian Kelly was hired that we’d be discussing back to back losses to Navy and Tulsa, but after an ill-advised decision to throw the football in the final seconds, that is exactly where we’re at.  Here are some initial thoughts on the game. Offense Despite [...]

Initial Impressions – Notre Dame 23, Pitt 17

Notre Dame jumped out to an early lead for the second week in a row, but this time the Irish needed a late defensive stand to hold on for a 23-17 win over Pitt. Here are this week’s initial impressions. Offense Dayne Crist is still a work in progress. He’s showing signs of really picking [...]

When ESPN released it’s list of Top 5 Notre Dame players last week it got the Irish blogosphere talking. In response, NBC’s Keith Arnold enlisted the help of a few of us Notre Dame bloggers to expanded on ESPN’s idea by ranking the top 25 players on the Irish roster. The first installment – players [...]

Initial Impressions – Notre Dame 24, Purdue 21

Jimmy Clausen came off the bench to lead Notre Dame to its second fourth quarter comeback in as many weeks Saturday night with a 24-21 victory over the Boilermakers.  The Irish didn’t have the services of Armando Allen and had Clausen for a little less than half the game, but were able to make a [...]

5 Questions Facing the Defense in ’09

Yesterday we took a look at five questions facing the Notre Dame offense in 2009.  Today we’ll take a look at five questions facing the young but talented Irish defense. 1. Will the young DL hold up? Like on the offensive side of the ball, the biggest question mark on defense for 2009 is the [...]

Blue/Gold Game Player Observations - Defense

Blue/Gold Game Player Observations – Defense

Here’s some thoughts from the Blue/Gold game on the defensive side of the ball. Defensive Line Ethan Johnson – Johnson was a force to be reckoned with Saturday. He got pressure on the QB and got good penetration on running plays. Johnson could be in for a breakout season and could be one of the [...]

Blanton, Fleming, & Kuntz Among Few Bright Spots

While tonight’s game will go down as one of the more embarassing of the Weis Era, a few young and one old defender showed some heart and played really good games despite the lopsided loss.  Robert Blanton, Darius Fleming, and Pat Kuntz played their hearts out as far as I could tell and did what [...]

Notre Dame @ USC – 1st Quarter

After a nice first play, why would you run a slow developing pitch against one of the fastest defenses in the country?  That play call put Notre Dame in a bad third down situation when it should have been third and short.  If Notre Dame is going to run the ball at all tonight, it [...]

Final (Initial) Thoughts on Navy

I finally got a chance to watch a recording of the game to post my full thoughts on the game. James Aldridge looked to have a nice burst against Navy, but went down on arm tackles on  a few occasions where he had a chance for big gains.  On the first play of the game, [...]

Blanton To See More Playing Time?

Freshman Robert Blanton was on the field for almost the entire overtime on Saturday in place of 3 year starter Terrail Lambert and the move could become more permanent from the sounds of Charlie Weis’s Sunday presser. He did a fairly decent job in covering most of the day. A couple tackles he would have [...]

Random Thoughts Coming Out of the Bye

Here’s some random thoughts coming off the bye week. Looking back at the UNC game for a minute… Was the first half of that game the best coached half of football under Weis since the 2005 USC game or was it just me? The game plan coming into the game and the play calling in [...]

Autry’s Den: Coming of Age

As I finish watching the end of Purdue game I could not be more satisfied with the effort our team showed today. As individuals we are defined by how we respond to the adversity we face in our lives. Last week our young Irish team was dealt a big blow in the loss in East [...]

Balanced Attack Throttles Boilers

The Irish returned home to Notre Dame Stadium yesterday and improved to 3-1 on the season after a 38-21 win over Purdue.  It was a game highlighted by superior play in all three phases of football at different points throughout the game.  While the win was an important one, this young team still has plenty [...]

2nd Quarter Thoughts – Purdue at Notre Dame

Nice, tough inside run by Armando Allen on 2nd and 1 to start the second quarter.  Allen ran into a pile earlier but made a nice cut here and had one of the better runs we’ve seen out of him so far. Great to see the QB sneak working on short yardage situations again.  This [...]
