Notre Dame Basketball Report: Irish Head Into “Bye” On a High

Last week was another successful one for the Irish men’s basketball squad, with two road victories at Boston College and North Carolina State that boosted the team’s ACC mark to 10-5 on the year and bumped them up to fourth place within the tightly-contested conference. That was good enough to boost Notre Dame up four spots to 21st in the weekly AP poll, yet they were unable to make up any ground on conference frontrunner North Carolina. The Tar Heels still remain 1.5 games ahead with just three conference matchups left in the regular season. Notre Dame Basketball Week in ...

Notre Dame Basketball Report: Irish Back in Top 25!

After seeing their season on the verge of collapse, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish were able to get back on track last week with two big wins, thereby improving their ACC mark to 8-5 on the year and placing them with 1.5 games of the lead. While they’re currently in a tie for fifth place with Syracuse, the race has become so tight that they’re within a single game of second place and have gotten back into the Top 25 by snagging the final spot in those weekly rankings. Home cooking agreed with the Irish as they won both contests ...

Notre Dame Basketball Knocks Off #14 Florida State: Highlights

Notre Dame snapped a four game losing streak earlier this week with a win on Wake Forest.  Saturday night the Irish made it back to back wins with an upset of #14 Florida State in a game they controlled from start to finish.  Led by a career night from Bonzio Colson and aided by some down right horrific free throw shooting by the Seminoles, the Irish prevailed 84-72 on their home court. Bonzie Colson strapped Notre Dame on his back Saturday night and was not going to let Florida State get their second win of the season over the Irish. ...

Notre Dame Basketball Report: Irish Tumbling, Fall Out of Polls

Another disastrous week for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish has them reeling, with five defeats in their last six games. Holding a 6-5 conference mark within the 15-team ACC, Notre Dame currently finds itself situated in seventh place. That’s a precipitous plunge from just a few weeks ago and helps explain their tumble out of the Top 25 rankings. A home loss to the Duke Blue Devils on January 30 was followed six days later by a road defeat at the hands of the North Carolina Tar Heels. In the latter case, that contest was pushed back 19 hours due ...

Notre Dame Basketball Report: Irish At Mid-Season Crossroad

In a week best forgotten by fans of the Fighting Irish, Notre Dame sustained a pair of defeats that were delivered in different ways, yet both proved to be just as painful. The end result was that the Irish dropped six spots in the polls to the 20th spot as they get set for a crucial week of action. Their two games this week could end determining whether or not they’ll be able to capture the regular season ACC title. Losses to both Virginia and Georgia Tech dropped Notre Dame into a three-way tie for third place in the conference ...

Notre Dame Basketball Falls to UVA Again: The Highlights

Notre Dame came up short against a ranked opponent again on Tuesday night dropping a lopsided contest to #12 Virginia 71-54 at Purcell Pavilion.  The #14 Fighting Irish were coming off an easy home win over the weekend to Syracuse but were unable to solve the Cavalier defense and have still yet to beat UVA in four tries in ACC play since joining the conference. The Virginia defense frustrated the Irish offense all night long by taking away the three point shot.  Notre Dame connected on just three of 18 attempts from beyond the arc while Virginia nailed 9 of 19 ...

Notre Dame Basketball Report: Irish Keep Climbing Polls

A mixed bag last week for the Notre Dame men’s basketball team helped send them into a three-way tie for the lead in the ACC with the North Carolina Tar Heels and Florida State Seminoles. The reason for this dogfight, with all three teams deadlocked with 6-1 conference records, stems from the road loss the Irish suffered in Tallahassee against Florida State. Notre Dame was able to rebound on Saturday afternoon with a convincing win over the Syracuse Orangemen and enters this week with an overall mark of 17-3. Despite that loss against the now sixth-ranked Seminoles, the Irish still ...

Notre Dame Basketball Report: Irish Jump to 15th in Rankings

Another promising week of consistency for the Notre Dame men’s basketball team resulted in their elevation to the 15th spot in both the AP and Coaches’ polls. The Irish managed to win a pair of games, each in exciting fashion. Both were conference victories, both came on the road and both ended up as five-point wins. Notre Dame enters the week with a 16-2 overall record and currently holds the ACC lead with a spotless 5-0 mark. Notre Dame Basketball Week in Review Last Thursday, some late heroics were required as Mike Brey’s squad trailed Miami, 61-57, with 2:46 left. ...

Notre Dame Basketball Takes Out Virginia Tech: The Highlights

Notre Dame stayed perfect in conference play Saturday afternoon with a 76-71 victory over Virginia Tech that pushed the Irish into first place as the league’s lone unbeaten team.  Florida State had unbeaten in league play as well but the Seminoles fell to North Carolina earlier today. Notre Dame raced out to a big early lead against the Hokies leading by as many as 19 points in the first half, but much like the Irish football team against the Hokies last fall, Notre Dame allowed Virginia Tech back in the game in the second half.  Luckily for the Irish, the ...

Notre Dame Still Perfect in ACC with Win over Miami: The Highlights

Notre Dame kept their record in ACC play unblemished on Thursday night in Miami with a 67-62 win over the Hurricanes.  The Irish overcame a sluggish start to the first half to pick up their fourth win in as many tries in ACC play.  Steve Vasturia built on his reputation of being clutch yet again by driving through the lane and sinking a layup with 8 seconds left to put the Irish up by three. Notre Dame used a 10-0 run to start the 2nd half to fuel their latest victory.  The run would be a sign of things to ...

Notre Dame Basketball: 3-0 ACC Start Has Irish on the Rise

Another move up in the polls for Notre Dame was the end result of two tight conference victories at home. This week has them moving up three spots in the AP poll to the 20th spot. In their wins, Notre Dame faced Louisville, which was ranked ninth when the game was played, and unranked Clemson, which made life just as difficult for the Irish and head coach Mike Brey. Notre Dame Basketball Week in Review The Cardinals came to South Bend looking for their first ACC win of the year, but left still seeking that elusive victory. Notre Dame was ...

Notre Dame Basketball Report: Irish Start ACC Play with a Bang!

The arrival of 2017 coincides with another rise in the polls for the Notre Dame men’s basketball. That’s courtesy of a overtime road victory at ACC rival Pittsburgh on New Year’s Eve that gave them a 12-2 season mark. That win followed the other less-memorable victory over Saint Peter’s that was likely due to the team looking ahead to their conference opener against the Panthers. Right now, it appears the coaches have a little more confidence than the contingent making up the AP poll. Last week, they both placed the Irish in the 24th spot for the Top 25; this ...

Notre Dame Basketball Report: Irish Bounce Back, Prepare for ACC

A thin schedule leading up to Christmas had the Notre Dame Fighting Irish only taking the court once last week. That home game on December 19 was a contest against the 2-9 Colgate Raiders, which ended with the not surprising score of 77-62 to elevate the Notre Dame mark to 10-2. Notre Dame Basketball Week in Review The victory also stopped a two-game losing skid that came against a pair of Top 25 opponents. The Colgate win started out with the Irish running off the first seven points of the game, only to see the Raiders with seven unanswered points ...

Notre Dame Basketball Report: Irish Fall to #25

A loss might have helped the Notre Dame men’s basketball squad last week, but one on Saturday was costly. That’s because it almost dropped the Irish out of the Top 25 rankings. They now find themselves ranked 24th in the Coaches Poll and 25th on the AP list. They’ll likely have to wait until ACC play gets going to move up. Notre Dame Basketball Week in Review Only one game was on the Notre Dame schedule last week, though it was another battle against a Top 25 squad. The Irish came up on the wrong end of an 86-81 score ...

Notre Dame Basketball Report: Irish Move Up Despite Loss

Even after suffering their first defeat of the year, the Notre Dame men’s basketball team managed to gain further credibility with both the AP voters and those that make up the Coaches Poll. After reaching the Top 25 for the first time last week at No. 22 and No. 23, respectively, both polls put the Irish at No. 21 on Monday. Notre Dame Basketball Week in Review A tough 74-68 loss on December 10 to the top-ranked Villanova Wildcats did the trick. In their only other game on the week, Notre Dame stopped Fort Wayne on December 6, avoiding an ...
