Analyzing Notre Dame Football’s Extreme Makeover

Gosh, we expected changes, but this? We all knew a shakeup was going to be coming; Brian Kelly and his football team couldn’t endure a 4-8 season and simply run it back with the old gang while making a tweak here and there. I’m not sure anyone saw the makeover that took place within the coaching staff, and probably most surprising, Kelly giving full control of the play calling to a new comer in the program, offensive coordinator Chip Long from Memphis. In all, Notre Dame is likely to welcome five new coaches, including both coordinators, and make an overhaul of the ...

8 Notre Dame Defenders to Watch in Mike Elko’s Defense

Mike Elko is still settling in as the new defensive coordinator at Notre Dame, but it’s not too soon to start thinking about players who will benefit the most from Elko’s defense.  Former defensive coordinator Brian Vangorder’s complex defense stopped working after about five games in 2014 leaving Notre Dame fans longing for a simple defense that produced results.  Elko’s defenses at Wake Forest did just that. Like Vangorder, Elko’s defense features a four man front, but where the two differ is in what Elko ran in 2016 at Wake Forest at the next level.  Elko’s utilized a 4-2-5 in ...

Mike Elko Hire Could Save Brian Kelly at Notre Dame

Mike Elko - Notre Dame Defensive Coordinator

Brian Kelly’s back is against the wall heading into 2017.  On the heels of a 4-8 season and in need of replacing the worst hire of his Notre Dame tenure this off-season, Kelly can’t afford another clunker of a season or bust at defensive coordinator.  The hiring of Mike Elko, however, could very well ensure neither of those happen next year and could ultimately save Kelly at Notre Dame. Notre Dame officially introduced Mike Elko as their new defensive coordinator on Monday days after the news was first reported that Elko was coming to South Bend for more than just ...

Recapping A Wild 2 Weeks of Notre Dame Football

Notre Dame isn’t preparing for a bowl game this holiday season, but that hasn’t stopped the Notre Dame news cycle from spinning in overdrive.  Graduate transfers, coaching hires, coaching fires, recruiting commitments, recruiting losses, program changes.  You name it, it’s happened in the last two weeks for Notre Dame.  With all of the comings and goings, I felt a recap of sorts was in order. Graduate Transfers Since the season has ended, Notre Dame has lost four graduate transfers – none of which was overly surprising. Corey Holmes – The first domino to fall was the announcement from junior wide ...

Mike Elko, Potential Homerun DC, Interviewing with Notre Dame

Monday wasn’t a great day of news for Notre Dame with Deshone Kizer leaving for the NFL and offensive coordinator Mike Sanford potentially leaving to be the head coach at Western Kentucky.  Notre Dame got one bit of good news today, however, with multiple reports of Wake Forest defensive coordinator Mike Elko interviewing with the Irish. There haven’t been many names mentioned in connection with the open Notre Dame defensive coordinator position thus far.  Charlie Strong’s name was floated by bloggers such as myself, but it was more pipe dream than reality as Strong drew heavy interest for open head ...
