Chris Quinn, Russell Carter Receive Big East Recognition

(UHND.com) — Senior Chris Quinn was named to the First Team All Big East squad Tuesday while junior Russell Carter was named to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll after averaging over 20 points a game last week. Quinn is the fourth Notre Dame player to be named to the first team since the Irish joined the Big East and the first since Matt Carroll in 2003.

Quinn led the Irish in scoring this past season with a career high 18.2 points a game average while dishing out a Big East leading 6.2 assists a night. Quinn’s stats were even better in league play where the senior point guard averaged 20.6 points a game to go along with 6.3 assists. His impressive conference scoring average included four 30 point outings making him just the third Golden Domer to reach that mark (Pat Garrity and Troy Murphy).

Quinn poured in a season high 37 points that included six three pointers in a 100-97 loss to Pittsburgh in the Irish’s conference opener. He followed that up 31 against both Providence and Louisville before adding 34 against Seton Hall in 101-92 win.

This was Quinn’s first season as “the man” running the show for the Irish after playing in Chris Thomas’ shadow the past few seasons and the Dublin, Ohio native flourished as the Irish’s primary scoring threat.

Despite the increased offensive production, Quinn saw his assist totals rise to a career high 6.2 a game including two double-doubles and multiple near misses. In the regular season loss to Georgetown, Quinn had a 26 point, 10 assist game and then added another double-double in the regular season finale against DePaul with 11 points and 10 assists.

On four other occasions Quinn was just 1 assist shy of a double-double and 2 assists shy on another three occasions. He also missed nearly had two triple-doubles along the way as well with a 14 point, 9 rebound, 8 assist outing against Fordham and an 18 point, 9 rebound, 8 assists effort in a two point loss to Villanova.

Quinn closes his career at Notre Dame as a two-time captain 1,421 career points (11.7/game) and 410 assists (3..4/game), and 153 steals (1.3/game).

Carter meanwhile is just getting started with making his mark at Notre Dame. The junior caught down the stretch this season. During the last week of the regular season, Carter averaged 21.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.0 steals a game to help propel the Irish into the Big East Tournament.

Heading into the Georgetown game earlier today, Carter had scored 20 points in three consecutive games and has now reached double figures in 8 of the last 9 games including a 12 point outing in the first round of the Big East Tournament.

Carter’s late season surge has brought his scoring average up to 11.7 points a game and has set himself up nicely for a larger role in the offense next season.

Quinn Receives Sportsmanship Award
