Notre Dame’s 2012 starting quarterback, Everett Golson, apologized to the Notre Dame community on Sunday after news broke late Saturday night that he has been expelled from the University for the fall semester reportedly due to academic reasons.

Here is the full text of Golson’s statement where he confirms that he intends on returning to Notre Dame once his academic issues are resolved.

Dear Notre Dame Community,

I have been informed by the University of Notre Dame that due to my poor academic judgment that I have been suspended from the University for the 2013 Fall Term.

I take full responsibility for my poor choices and will do all that is asked of me to regain the trust of my family, friends, teammates, coaches and the entire Notre Dame community.

I chose to attend Notre Dame because of its mission to develop me both on and off the football field.

My parents and the community I grew up in have instilled values in me that have and will continue to allow me to be successful in the future. There have been many lessons learned as I worked to become the starting quarterback at Notre Dame and each was a result of Coach Kelly’s belief in me as an athlete and a person.

At this point, I understand how my integrity could be in question but I want to reassure my supporters that through this experience I will return a better student athlete as well as a better individual.

Lastly, I want to thank the University of Notre Dame for the opportunity already granted and also the opportunity going forth to regain my eligibility in the winter of 2014.

  1. “It’s is not totally the kids fault”

See…. that’s where you strayed off course. This isn’t day care or high school.

These are not “kids”, they are young adults who are responsible for their actions.

If you were in college would you want to walk around with a shock collar on?

    Of course not.

    Now class… claaaaaaas…. cla…. WAKE UP!

    thank you.

    1. He probably needed a Sister Mary Elephant to help him. The adult who dropped the ball is Mr. Golson. You’re right Shaz, young adults need to answer for their actions, even major college football QB’s.

      Go ND

  2. How exactly does this happen at of all places Notre Dame? Who is at fault?
I’m assuming his grades were not up to the standards at ND or the NCAA. What about a tutor and how does the QB get to this point? It is not totally the kids fault. Some adult dropped the ball. Wasn’t anyone checking to see if Golson was going to class etc.? Wake up ND!

  3. He cheated; he got caught; he’s doing the time for his crime. Would have been better off at UNC where cheating is encouraged.

  4. Can’t replace him and he was going to be a huge success this season. Sorry for the problems he has had. Rees is not the answer, give Hendricks a shot. Bet Gunner is sorry he left, but we don’t need a quitter. Go Irish!

  5. When EG returns it will be a testimony to Notre Dame’s quality as a academic institution.

  6. There seems to be a lot of opinions on how this team will be without Golson at QB. There are a couple of things we need to keep in mind as we evaluate this situation.

First of all, Kelly said they were going to increase the tempo of the offense. I don’t think that changes with Rees at QB. He is very good at reading the defense and might do well in the up tempo offense. Just look what he did in relief last year.

The other thing is that Chuck Martin is going to be the play caller and we have no idea how this is going to change the make-up of the offense. A look at history shows that Martin prefers to run first. Rees may be the perfect “game manager” for Martin. If out line does their job and we get production from the running backs, Tommy may not have to carry the team and throw for a bunch of yards.

Lots of what ifs, but keep this in mind…we are better off at QB right now then we were when Quinn and Clausen left.

    1. I would be a lot more comfortable if Rees played this fall as much as Rudy did. Hendrix finally should get a “REAL” shot at QB not just filling in during garbage time I still think he was the pick of QB’s on the team last year. Hope Martin gives him an opportunity to showcase his talent

  7. Everett is a class act and is taking his punishment, which is just, with class. I would welcome him back and hope he succeeds.

  8. MtA – I agree completely. My jaded-judgement produces a worst-case-scenario of Everett being told that he had to be squeaky-clean, or else… And of course, “being squeaky-clean” is next-to-impossible for students with the high-profiles of Football players. (and o’ya – the STARTING QB!) Everett seemed a good kid, from what I and everyone else had to judge from. He stumbled. He fell. Life-Alert was nowhere to be found. (“I’ve fallen and I can’t get-up!”)
    Stuff happens.
BK’s coaching philosophy of “next-stud-in” is paying dividends once again. Everything’ll be OK. These blowhards who are trying to nail the coffin shut on ND already are like little girls over-reacting. Those jerks are trying to hold our Irish to reasonable standards. “What is they, ignorant?”

    1. And as for Everett’s future…that seems like a daunting prospect for him to face. Precarious. Hendrix/Zaire will have this year’s development under their belt. And as Everett tries to earn a spot after a year-off, H/Z will have a more recent year’s experience. Feel bad for Everett, but he brought it on himself. Man-up and be responsible.

  9. A class act- through and through . . .

To so many of our self-righteous brethren who so quickly condemn him
before they even know what exactly happened, I have some simple advice for you.

When you were young, did you, under pressure to achieve under extremely challenging situations,
ever make errors in judgment- either preparing for classes (EG) or partying and over-reacting during free time (TR)?

And when you did, was the consequence losing your opportunity at a world-class university and,
as an added consequence, a potential future in the NFL ?

Or did you get away with it so it was okay?

“Let he who is without sin . . .”/ let the casting of stones commence.
