Hart Officially Named DL Coach

Notre Dame officially announced the hiring of Randy Hart as defensive line coach on Saturday. Last week IrishEyes reported the hiring of Hart, and Saturday that news became official.

Here’s what Charlie Weis had to say about the addition of Hart to the staff.

“I’m thrilled to add someone with the resume and personality of Randy Hart to our coaching staff,” Weis said. “As I discussed last week, there were certain attributes and qualities I was looking for in this hire. First and foremost, he had to have great chemistry with Jon (Tenuta, defensive coordinator) and Corwin (Brown, associate head coach). Second, we wanted someone that was a high-energy coach that could develop our young defensive line. Lastly, I was looking for a coach that would serve as a great mentor to (defensive graduate assistant coach) Bryant Young.

“With Randy joining our program we have added a veteran coach of great character and knowledge that truly completes our coaching staff. I welcome Randy and Linda along with their sons to the Notre Dame family and look forward to introducing him to our team soon.”

And here’s what Hart said on joining the staff.

“I’m excited to come to Notre Dame and be part of such a storied and tradition-rich university,” said Hart. “I look forward to working with Coach Weis, the entire football staff, and our team of young men to perpetuate a great defense, a great team, and winning football games.”

I mentioned it last week, but I will say it again – I really like this hire.  Everything I have read about Hart leads to me to believe that he will be a good fit with this staff and will do a very good job teaching our young defensive linemen.  Hart is decribed as being firey and intense by just about everyone who talks about him and that attitude should fit in very well with Corwin Brown and Jon Tenuta.  The one area where I have a little concern is on the recruiting front because of the problems we’ve had recruiting the position.  Hopefully the pressence of Bryant Young as a graduate assistant, even if he can’t make in-home visits, will help in this area.

Overall though, this was a very solid hire for Weis and capped off a pretty good off-season of coaching changes.

  1. I expect great things from Bryant Young, and it appears Randy Hart will be an excellent fit for ND at this time.

  2. i like our new coaching staff, i like the talent we have, and i like our schedule. the biggest weakneses we have is along the line on both sides. hopefully these new coaches can give the players a good kick in the a$$ so that ND can finally get to that next level where they belong.

  3. Nothing agianst Romeo Crennel, but I like the idea of hiring a coach who’s life’s work has been developing young high school kids. A college coach of 21 years knows a little something about getting players to play with some emotion. Something that seems to have been missing the past few years.
