Mele Kalikimaka, Irish Fans: Notre Dame Headed to Hawaii Bowl

Notre Dame has officially accepted a bid to the Hawaii Bowl to take on the Warriors of Hawaii.  The game will take place on Christmas Eve at 8pm ET which should fit in nicely between Christmas Eve dinner and midnight mass.

The University has an official release with quotes from head coach Charlie Weis.

The Fighting Irish (6-6) will face Hawai’i (7-6) in the seventh annual Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl on Dec. 24, the NCAA announced Sunday evening.

“We’re very excited about heading out west to play in the Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl,” head coach Charlie Weis said. “This is a great opportunity for our team to face a quality opponent in their backyard and we’ll need to be ready.

“I know the extra practices this month will really benefit our team and we look forward to ending this season on a good note.”

So in the words of Bing Crosby, Mele Kalikimaka Notre Dame fans.  (I would have included the youtube clip of the scene from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation featuring Bing’s classic Christmas tune, but it’s not completely safe for the kiddies).

  1. I look forward to a great game come Christmas Eve. I hope that a lot of ND fans are able to make it out for the game. Weather should be nice, sunny in the upper 70’s and lows in the upper 60’s. Sure beats the snow and 20-30 degrees that you are going through now.

  2. Oh yeah, i know he left a long time ago. But lets say he stayed even another 3 years. I think the program would be better off because of it.

  3. I’ll never forget the on-field interview with Chris Zorich minutes after ND lost to Colorado in ’89…and the infamous ‘Rocket’ run back. He was very upset and crying but still managed a ‘yes sir, no sir, during the interview. Despite the loss, you were extremely proud of the players. Zorro was intense.

  4. Another thing, have you ever noticed how Chris Zorich gets fired up at the pep rally?

I think yet today he would scare college lineman halfway down the field. Oh, and guess who his coach was?

I bet yet today, I could muster up a 5.5 – 40 with him chasing me.

  5. Good Point David, it doesn’t seem like it but he has been gone over 15+ years.

I truely believe if he would have stayed for just another 10, he would have broken every ND head coaching record known to man. I think that was part of the problem. Now, look what we have gotten in years since he’s been gone. Bitter, you bet, they owe him more than a statue.

It’s too bad our ego’s at ND won’t allow him to come back and straighten out this mess.

Oh well, it’s not my call, but definately a multitude of golden windows on many fronts are being passed on for the moment.

C-DOG Correct me if I am wrong.

  6. On a positive note, Our last real head football coach Lou Holtz is being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame tonight.

  7. David,
I dont feel bashed nor do I think any other ND fan, student, alum or anyone else on this website. LoL Keep it coming. BoB has some issues. Ok, Major.

  8. C-Dogg,
CW will be back next year no matter how bad/good this bowl game turns out. Swarbrick and ND already released that “official” statement and I believe it has no barring on this bowl game.

  9. Aloha from Hawaii! Bring some sunscreen, and don’t forget your thongs; they are quite popular over here.

We don’t take football as seriously as surfing so no need practice too much.

  10. If the Irish lose this bowl game, Charlie may not last a week afterward. I don’t say that as if I want that, but there is a lot on the line here. ND has an opponent that everyone expects a good ND team should beat. Weis has been put on notice by Swarbrick. And there is the specific desire to see the bowl streak end. I’m on the fence for Weis but given the indicators vaguely put out there by the AD, you might think the bowl win could be one of the items that Swarbrick will judge Weis on regarding improvement for 2009. Weis better not let Swarbrick down, and the team better not let Swarbrick down. I’ll want to see if our guys come out with emotion on behalf of their coaches.

  11. I really hope Werner Herzog decides to film a documentary on one known as “robert thomas patrick gilleran” in the future. It’ll be like Grizzly Man, but with the subject unhealthily obsessed with “hansenites” instead of bears.

  12. this is a game ND should win!!! Michael Floyd will be back and he should really help us out!! and im sure Manti Te’o will be there to watch the game and a good win will really help us land him!!
GO Irish good luck in the bowl game we could really use the win!! I dont even want think what would happen if we lose this game!!

  13. {4. for you and your hansenite friends, trips to hawaii might not be very unpleasant since hawaii is a small place and our samoan process servers will be hunting down every hansenite who shows up with some very unpleasant christams presents, civil lawsuits which you will have to fight in the hawaiian courts, not wherever you live.}

I didn’t know that being a leper was a civil offense in Hawaii.

  14. UH will win this one!

They are hungry for revenge from 1997 when they almost beat Notre Dame.

    My guess:

    UH 34 Notre Dame 21
