Former Notre Dame WR David Givens Signs with Tennessee

(UHND.com) — Reports circulated Sunday that David Givens was set to resign with the Patriots, on Wednesday the fourth year receiver from Notre Dame signed with the Tennessee Titans for fives year and $24 million.

Givens, a former seventh round pick, developed into a reliable receiver for the Patriots the past few seasons which culminated with a career high 59 catches in 2005 for 738 yards and two touchdowns.

In Tennessee, Givens will benefit from being in offensive guru Norm Chow’s offense which was slow to develop last year with a suspect group of wide receivers. Drew Bennett was the #1 receiver in 2005, but the Titans lacked the reliable second option that Givens will give them.

Both Givens and Bennett will compete for the actual #1 spot with the Titans, but either way both should benefit from this move. Norm Chow’s offense is a very good fit for Givens who isn’t a huge vertical threat but excels at route running and gaining yards after the catch.

While at Notre Dame, Givens flash a lot of talent, but the lack of any sort of offensive identity for the Irish during his career didn’t do much for his statistics. In his four seasons with the Irish, Givens gained 814 yards on 72 catches with three touchdowns.

Givens got drafted in the 7th round based on his talent alone by the Patriots and developed into a starter under then offensive coordinator and current Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis. With the Irish Givens was a threat to run, throw, or pass, but was talent was wasted for the most part with an ineffective passing game to get him the ball.

In four season with the Patriots Givens has increased his catches each year and has totaled 158 receptions for 2,214 yards and 12 touchdowns. He has been at his best however in the playoffs where Givens is one game shy of tying an NFL record for consecutive playoff games with a touchdown. Givens has caught a touchdown in 7 consecutive playoff games including two of the last three Super Bowls.

Givens is the second Notre Dame alum to sign a large free agent contract since free agency started in the NFL on Saturday joining defensive end Anthony Weaver who signed for five million a year with a $10 million bonus.
