Notre Dame was a little undermanned coming into the Purdue game with Christian Lombard and Andrew Trumbetti out in addition to the academic five.  The Irish suffered even more losses in their win over the Boilermakers though with Cole Luke, Nicky Baratti, and Amir Carlisle all leaving the game.  Here’s the latest on all of the walking wounded for Notre Dame

  • Andrew Trumbetti had a head/neck injury from last week’s win over Michigan and was unable to go, but should be a full go for Syracuse in two weeks.  With Trumbetti out, Romeo Okwara had the best game of his career with a team high 11 tackles.
  • Amir Carlisle suffered a MCL injury and will undergo an MRI, but it is not believed to be as severe as the MCL injury that has sidelined Austin Collinsworth for the last three weeks.  Kelly said on Sunday that they are hopeful Carlisle will be ready for Syracuse.
  • Christian Lombard will also be back in time for the Syracuse game which will hopefully be a boost for a struggling OL.  Lombard was held out this week with an ankle injury.
  • Sophomore wide receiver Torii Hunter will likely make his collegiate debut against Syracuse as he recovers from a groin injury suffered in camp.  Kelly said he should be ready for Cuse and will get a long look at the slot receiver position with Carlisle banged up.
  • Jarrett Grace remains doubtful for Syracuse according to Kelly.  With each passing week it seems more and more likely he won’t see the field this year.
  • Cole Luke suffered a concussion against Purdue and will go through the concussion protocol this week.  If Notre Dame were to play this weekend his status would probably be very much in the air, but with the bye week he’ll have an extra week.
  • Nicky Baratti had the worst news of all of the injured Irish players.  Baratti’s latest shoulder injury will sideline him for the season.  Tough break for Baratti who would have had a chance to make plays last night in Redfield’s absence.

Kelly also addressed the academic five on Sunday by stating that to his knowledge none of the five had had their hearings as of Friday.  If that is the case, it’s safe to wonder if this situation will be resolved by the time the Irish return to the field in two weeks.

The good news, however, was that aside from Baratti’s injury, it sounds like Notre Dame could be close to 100%.  Kelly didn’t have an update on Collinsworth, but if he were back in time for Syracuse and the Irish got back Lombard, Carlisle, Hunter, Luke, and Trumbetti; they will be in great shape.

As annoying as a bye week is this early in the season for the fans, the Irish desperately need it to get healthy in time for the October gauntlet of Stanford, North Carolina, and Florida State.

  1. It still seems to take a long time to get the plays in. ND snapped the ball with 2 or 3 seconds on the clock almost every play. Is this by design?

  2. With late game the Meadowlands Market will be open at 8am with 500 vendors, great day to pick up bargains and great food for tailgaters.

  3. Jerry, I am with you on Bryant. And it wont be long we will see him more often. However our backs aren’t getting holes to run thru. I expect BK to get it corrected in next two weeks and ready for Syracuse. We are too talented on OL.

  4. It is the revolving running backs that is the problem. Give Bryant the ball
20 times like other top teams do witheir best running back and we would
    get yardage.

    1. Sorry dude, it’s the offensive line that’s the problem. All three backs would have 100 yards or close to it if someone blocked.

    2. Jerry I hear you on this but unfortunately this is how BK uses his RBs. He has done this every year and I dont see it changing. Every offensive series he uses a different RB. The RBs never get a feel for the game this way IMO. These are 18-20 year old kids. They are not tired. Imagine what it would be like if GA111 came back for his senior year. Bk would get him 6-8 touches as well.

    1. NO LOOK AT OREGON’S NUMBERS RUNNING THE FOOTBALL. THEY ARE THE FASTED NO HUDDLE TEAM IN THE COUNTRY. LOOK AT BYU’S NUMBERS ALSO

    2. Why would it? An OL that doesn’t stay with their blocks does affect the running game though. I’m confident this will be corrected.
