Series History

The series has historically has been both sporadic, and lopsided, with Notre Dame leading overall, 16-2.  However, the Tar Heels won the most recent match up in 2008.  Perhaps the most memorable moment came in 1975, when Joe Montana came into the game to lead a late scoring drive to give the Irish a 21-14 win at Chapel Hill.

  1. Anyone have any inside info. on the 5 suspended players? I know Kelly said a ruling was “Imminent”. Someone has to know something. Help me out here, people!

  2. fxm, great news on Wimbush indeed. In Spring of 2016, Zaire, Kizer and Wimbush will be competing to replace Golson, and who knows, there may
be an early entrant from California also. Very cool indeed, fxm.

  3. Woody, ya know I love ya, but there’s one other source on field turf:

When Crawford gave his pledge to Notre Dame, the Irish were in transition from grass to field turf. The Ohio product gave a thumbs-up on the new addition.

“I loved the field turf,” Crawford stated. “I was on the field before the game and before the rain, it felt good. At halftime, I touched the field and it felt good. While it was raining, it still felt like there was traction. Field turf is definitely better and I know if it wasn’t there, it would have been muddy and just a sloppy game. I definitely think the field turf was a better idea.”

The four-star commit also got time to start meeting his fellow classmates and really started to develop better relationships with them. He even got a surprise from a future teammate he didn’t know he had.

“I talked to Elijah Taylor, Brandon Tiassum and Tommy Kraemer,” said Crawford. “It was definitely fun. Brandon is a clown and I got to stand in the stands with him. Micah Dew-Treadway and Brandon are just clowns. I am excited to get to go to class with them, be on the same team and just become teammates.

“Tommy was really excited at the game and I actually got to play him two weeks ago. After the game, I shot him a DM on Twitter saying ‘Come to ND’ and then I see him at the game. The first thing he said to me was, ‘I committed to Notre Dame’. I asked him when he did and he told me he had done it earlier in the day. I know with that game, it really helped make him sure he made the right decision.”

Crawford will most likely line up at cornerback for the Irish and he really got a chance to see what his future role could be like.

“I watched the secondary a lot and I loved the way they played,” he explained. “I got to meet Cody Riggs after the game and I loved the way Cole Luke plays. I loved how aggressive he was when the ball was in the air. I love the way they play. On third downs, they bring another corner in and move Cody down to nickel.”

Shaun Crawford and Woody O’Hardy, the verbally nimble and the athletically nimble!

  4. Predicting a beatdown. I expect ND to use this game to work on some key areas to be ready to go next week, like pounding the ball and get some confidence in the run game. Also Golson may not throw an incomplete pass.
    Let’s go!!!

    1. As long as it doesn’t rain buckets in South Bend this weekend. I think if ND hadn’t had the horrible weather they could have really pushed Stanford and won be even more points.

  5. Yeah! The new field turf is excellent. Especially for our fast, talented team. Good job, Jack and Brian!!!

    Go IRISH!

  6. In the last 3 games, the UNC defense has given up 70, 50, & 34 points.(51 points per game average)

This year, the ND offense is averaging 31 points per game.

Conventional wisdom says that UNC will need some serious help in trying slowing down the Irish offense this Saturday.

In seasons past, they may have gotten that help.

After playing the previous week’s home game in a pouring, game long rain storm, we would have come to expect that the field conditions for this week’s game to be deplorable, or at the very least, degraded, due to re-sodding.

And we would also expect to see the players having much difficulty in starting, stopping, and cutting.

Now I don’t know if UNC will find a way to slow down the Irish, but I can tell you this, they aren’t going to get any help from our field.

When the lads run out of that tunnel, the field conditions will be perfect.
