One of Notre Dame’s earliest commitments for the class of 2018, Jayson Ademilola, earned the distinction of being named the #1 recruit in the state of New Jersey on Thursday from NJ.com. Ademilola, a 4-star defensive tackle recruit from St. Peter’s Prep, moved up the NJ.com rankings and into the top spot after previously checking in at #8.
During the 2016 season Ademilola was a nightmare for opposing offenses to deal with. He racked up 22.5 tackles for loss with 10.5 sacks and 88 total tackles. And he is still improving. Ademilola spent the off-season between his sophomore and junior years to work on using his hands better and exploding off the line. The work paid off during the 2016 season and now he finds himself as the top recruit in his state.
Here’s what NJ.com had to say on their rationale behind ranking Ademilola as their #1 recruit:
Ademilola edged those two out as he displayed a tremendous motor, burst and violent hands all season long. And he was efficient in both facets of defensive line play — as he anchored down against the run and provided interior pass rush which any quarterback will tell you is the toughest type of pressure to combat.
Other programs have taken notice to the improvements in Ademilola’s game as well with more offers rolling including one that is sure to give Notre Dame fans a bit of indigestion – Ohio State. As of now though, Jayson Ademilola says that he is fully committed to Notre Dame and his recent trip to South Bend for the Junior Day that netted Notre Dame commitments from Kalon Gervin, Cole Mabry, Micah Jones, and Braden Lenzy should have only strengthened that commitment.
At 6’3″, 283 lbs already, Ademilola will give Notre Dame a disruptive force on the interior of the defensive line. When added to last year’s haul of Darnell Ewell and Kurt Hinish, it’s hard not to get excited about the future depth on the interior of the defensive line for Notre Dame.
Justin Ademilola in Top 10 Too
Jayson’s twin brother and fellow Notre Dame commitment Justin is not far behind his brother in the rankings at #10. NJ.com’s evaluation of Justin Ademilola should have Notre Dame fans excited as well.
Arguably New Jersey’s most fierce pass rusher in 2016, Ademilola and his twin brother Jayson lived up to their billings throughout their junior campaigns. Justin currently holds 23 offers from the who’s who of college football, but settled with his brother on Notre Dame last June.
Most. Fierce. Pass Rusher. That has a nice sound to it, doesn’t it? Notre Dame needs pass rushers in this class and Justin Ademilola gives the Irish one whether he ends up as a weak-side end or grows into more of a strong-side defensive end down the road. At 6’2″, 245 lbs already it’ll very interesting to watch where his best position ends up being long term.
In many ways, Ademilola is a similar prospect to Malik Vann and his early commitment and presence in this class likely played a role in Notre Dame’s decision to move on from Vann last month.
Notre Dame has a pair of very good defensive linemen on their hands in the Ademilola twins and it shouldn’t surprise anyone if Justin Ademilola follows a similar path to his brother’s up the rankings of the top recruits in the Garden State.
Can Notre Dame Pull of a St. Peter’s Prep Trio?
Notre Dame offered another St. Peter’s Prep standout, safety Shayne Simon, in January as well and like the Ademilola twins, Simon was in the NJ.com Top 50 at #4 overall. Side note, good luck to any opposing offense facing that defense this fall.
The 247Sports Crystal Ball is currently pointing to Michigan here but Notre Dame is considered a contender. Stanford, Ohio State, Tennessee, and Wisconsin have all offered as well.
