The annual Blue & Gold Weekend wasn’t the banner recruiting event its been in the past due to the scaled down festivities from the construction on the Campus Crossroads Project, but that didn’t stop Notre Dame from making recruiting headlines when Liam Eichenberg, a 4-star offensive lineman from Ohio, committed to Notre Dame on Sunday.

Eichenberg was fresh off a weekend visit to Ohio state when he announced that he was committing to Notre Dame.  The Ohio native had visited Notre Dame last weekend after narrowing down his decision to the Irish or the Buckeyes.  Luckily for the Irish, he spurred the in-state Buckeyes and joined Tommy Kraemer to give Notre Dame one heck of a combo to start of it’s offensive line recruiting.

247 Sports rated Eichenberg as the #17 overall prospect in the country in their composite rankings and in addition to offers from Notre Dame and Ohio State, he had collected offers from Alabama, Florida State, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, and West Virginia.

Notre Dame, led by the recruiting prowess of offensive line coach Harry Hiestand, has now gone head to head with Ohio State for both Kraemer and Eichenberg and has come out on top both times.  247 Sports rates both among the top 5 tackles in the entire country for the class of 2016.

Notre Dame landed just two offensive linemen this past season after Jerry Tillery’s move to defensive tackle making the offensive line an area of focus in this recruiting cycle.  Consider the early returns a job very well done for the Notre Dame coaching staff.

With Eichenberg on board, Notre Dame now has six commitments for the class of 2016 after adding Julian Okwara last week.

  1. Just a hunch Kenneth but my guess is Rivals knows a thing or two about rating players. If you could please provide star ratings for every Junior and Senior HS football player then we can compare.

  2. How Rivals only have this kid rated as 3 star is just crazy. Its great to get the top two players in Ohio considering Meyer usually gets what he want recruiting wise. They came hard, had the last visit and Eichenberg still chose Notre Dame.

    Outstanding pick up.
