Michael Floyd Dancing With the 5 Stars

Michael Floyd was a five star wide receiver according to Scout.com last year and based on his fast start this year I decided to take a look at how he is doing compared with the other five star receivers to come out of high school last year.  Based on the numbers, it looks like Floyd is matching up quite well with the other five star receivers.

5 Star Wide Receiver Production

Rank Player Rec Yards Avg Long TD
1. Julio Jones (Alabama) 19 278 14.6 36 4
2. AJ Green (Georgia) 22 388 17.6 39 3
3. DeAndre Brown (Southern Miss) 23 370 16.1 68 (TD) 3
4. DeVier Posey (Ohio State) 6 63 10.5 25 (TD) 1
5. Michael Floyd (Notre Dame) 21 333 15.9 48 (TD) 3
6. Jonathan Baldwin (Pitt) 3 67 22.3 52 (TD) 1
7. Aldarius Johnson (Miami) 12 111 9.3 27 1
8. DJ Shoemate (USC) 0 0 0 0 0
9. Dan Buckner (Texas) 3 26 8.7 12 (TD) 1
  • Floyd ranks 3rd in receptions and yards and is tied for second in touchdowns.  He also has the third longest single reception of the group behind DeAndre Brown and Jonathan Baldwin.
  • Overall it looks like Scout did a pretty good job ranking these receivers since four of them are already making big time impacts for their respective schools.  Jones, Green, and Brown all lead their teams in receiving yards.  Floyd ranks second behind Golden Tate for Notre Damee.

I think we’ll have to take a lok at these numbers again in a couple weeks because smething tells me that by the end of the season, Floyd’s numbers might look a little more impressive compared to his fellow five star receivers in a couple weeks.

How nice is it to have a five star recruit come in and immediately live up to the hype for a change?

  1. what really stands out to me in all of this is that fact that we now have a team that is capable of allowing a five star recruit be able to succeed. I think that if floyd were on the team last year his numbers would not be as impressive as they are right now…it is a very encouraging sign that the team has improved enough to allow this to happen…Go Irish

  2. Might be helpful to see the school name next to the guys listed. I know Julio is at Bama and Devoir is at OSU, but some of the others guys don’t ring a bell.

  3. That is great to see. Hopefully the staff can pick something intangible out of this and continue to recruit players who are going to live up to the hype, something we have lacked prior to the past couple of years. I had the chance to watch Floyd play last year when he was in high school and this was prior to his commitment and I knew he was going to be dominate. I talked to some of his coaches after he committed and they said he is going to be a stud and play from day 1, guaranteed. Great to see it!!!
