Irish Offer ’10 Midwest QB

Notre Dame made an offer to Devin Gardner – one of the Midwest’s top quarterbacks for the class of 2010 according to Bill Kurelic of ESPN.com

“Notre Dame offered me on Friday,” Gardner said. “My coach told me to give them a call. I talked to Coach (Charlie) Weis and he offered. I was excited. It’s really exciting.”

However, Gardner says he has no plans to make a commitment anytime soon. He visited a number of schools during the football season and plans to continue to check out his options.

Gardner will either attend Notre Dame’s junior day on Saturday or Ohio State’s on Sunday. He also plans to visit Michigan State at the end of the month and Michigan in February.

“I don’t have any favorites,” Gardner said. “I won’t be deciding (on a college) anytime soon.”

With Notre Dame missing out on a quarterback this year, it will be imperative for the Irish to sign a top rated signal caller in 2010 so expect Weis to target a bunch of quarterbacks for next year.

  1. Heaps will be going to BYU or Washington. With a former $Cum assistant coach leading the way at Washington, BYU might be dissed again by one of their own.

I highly doubt Gardner will be Irish. Sounds like he is going to wait a long time to decide. Weis will want someone in the fold by spring time. High school QB’s don’t take a long time to decide because you want to snatch up a scholarship fast at that position. You never see kids like Clausen or Barkley delay. It’s just not smart for QB’s to do that. Gardner will probably stay in state or go to OSU.

I say we offer Montana next!

  2. Great offer. But can someone please tell me how some of these contact rules make any sense. I mean seriously, can’t a coach call the player to say he is extending a scholarship offer instead of the dance of calling the HS coach to say Hey, have X give coach Weis call”

i am sure it would get abused in some way but I think a one call exception could be instituted.

  3. This offer needed to go out since it appears Jake Heaps is going to be difficult to pull out of the state of Washington. I know Charlie loves Heaps but I think on film Gardner looks like a better player right now and potentially in the future.
