Brian Kelly Talks Notre Dame Fall Camp ’19 Day 4

Another day of camp, another video of Brian Kelly updating us where the Irish are in the early stages of 2019 preparations. First off, let’s start with a couple of injury notes from today:

  • Sophomore RB Jahmir Smith has a broken hand but will continue to play with a cast.
  • Freshman OL Quinn Carroll has a knee injury and will be out for the season. Tough break for the early enrollee who impressed in the spring but was looking to redshirt this year anyways.

Thoughts on head coach Brian Kelly’s recap of Day 4:

  • It sounds like Shaun Crawford is competing for both for a cornerback spot and safety spot on the team.  Both positions have a lot of depth according to Kelly, so it will be interesting to see what playing time Crawford earns this fall in camp.
  • LB Asmar Bilal was at BUCK today, but I’m not so sure he will even start this season despite being the only linebacker with extensive starting experience.
  • Backup sophomore QB Phil Jurkovec made improvements today in his footwork and mechanics according to Kelly.  His development is huge this fall since he will likely have to play given the chances of injury to starter Ian Book.  Speaking of Book, it looks like he’s sporting a mustache…

  • Love the way the receivers are competing out there for the ball.  From the highlight of sophomore WR Braden Lenzy going deep and getting separation “over the top”, he could be a huge down the field target for Book this season.
  • Junior Michael Young makes a sensational catch over Troy Pride who was absolutely blanketing him in coverage brought flashbacks of Michael Floyd out there.  Young looks really well put together and it’s obvious he’s been working hard with Balis in the strength department.
  • Kelly praised senior Javon McKinley and sophomore WR Lawrence Keys who both could be due for breakout seasons as backups.  And of course, the highlight of Chase Claypool going over Troy Pride (poor Pride had perfect coverage again) to make another sensational catch has me excited about the endless possibilities at a very deep wide receiver position this season for Book to use at his disposal.

It looks like freshmen Isaiah Foskey and Kyle Hamiltonboth of whom were in our instant impact freshmen list – are making their presences felt running special teams drills.

Tomorrow will be open to the media and the focus will be on the defense and tackling according to Kelly.
