Notre Dame Unveils ’19 Senior Day Jerseys Honoring ’88 Champs

Last night Notre Dame teased fans with a tweet that alluded to a new jersey/uniform reveal today and sure enough, today the University and Under Armour unveiled a new jersey / uniform combination for the Irish to wear on Senior Day vs. Boston College.  Unlike some Under Armour jerseys in the past, these throwbacks are very subtle and less likely to annoy the “get off my lawn crowd.”

Here’s a look at the jerseys up close.

Background on These Throwback Uniforms

Considering Notre Dame is playing Boston College on Senior Day, we initially thought that the jerseys unveiled today would honor Frank Leahy, the legendary coach who won four national titles for Notre Dame after getting his start coaching the Eagles.

Instead, the jerseys will honor Notre Dame’s last national champions, the 1988 Fighting Irish.  There are only some subtle differences in these jerseys and what the Irish typically wear at home.  The numerals on these jerseys looked like the mesh material that the Irish wore in 1988 when Champion was the official provider of Notre Dame’s uniforms.

The cleats that Notre Dame will wear are also a throwback to the black cleats that Notre Dame wore at the time as are the pants which are a much more toned down “gold” compared to the more “goldenrod” color pants Notre Dame has been wearing the last few years since switching to Under Armour.

If you had to sum these up, they are a not so distant throwback look using 2019 uniform technology.  As such, unlike past years, the subtle changes are unlikely to ruffle the feathers of those within the fanbase that get annoyed at any deviation from the traditional blue and gold home uniform combo.  For instance, last year’s Yankees inspired pinstripes drew the ayre of many for how far out those designs were.

A New Senior Day Tradition?

Notre Dame wearing these jerseys on Senior Day in 2019 marks the third year in a row in which the Fighting Irish wear unique uniforms/jerseys on Senior Day.  In 2017, the Irish honored Knute Rockne with the Rockne Heritage uniforms.  Last year Notre Dame donned green jerseys on Senior Day when Florida State visited Notre Dame Stadium.

We’ll see if this is a tradition that continues year over year – especially during years in which the Shamrock Series continues.  Notre Dame has traditionally worn alternative uniforms for all Shamrock Series games dating back to the first in 2009.
