Notre Dame picked up its 20th commitment for the class of 2015 on Tuesday night when Florida safety Devin Studstill, 247Sports’s #13 ranked safety, committed to the Irish over Texas, West Virginia, Miami, and North Carolina.
Standing 6’0″, 180 lbs, Studstill was one of the first defensive backs to be offered by Notre Dame in the class of 2016 and is yet another early enrollee who will be starting his Notre Dame career in January.
Studstill is the second commitment for Notre Dame in the last week. Â A week ago 5-star linebacker/defensive Daelin Hayes gave Notre Dame’s it’s highest profile recruit in the class of 2016. Â While committing to Notre Dame on a local ESPN affiliate, Studstill credited watching Notre Dame on the Showtime series “A Season With Notre Dame Football” as one of the reasons he ended up selecting Notre Dame over his other finalists.
With Studstill’s commitment, Notre Dame now has six defensive backs in the class of 2016. Â Studstill joins Donte Vaughn, Jalen Elliot, Julian Love, DJ Morgan, and Spencer Perry. Â Notre Dame isn’t done recruiting the defensive back field in this class either. Â The Irish are still pursuing corners Jordan Fuller, Damar Hamlin, Tony Pride Jr, and David Long.
Studstill is also Notre Dame’s sixth commitment from the state of Florida as well. Â Fellow defensive back Spencer Perry and Studstill join running back Tony Jones, offensive lineman Parker Boudreaux, running back Deon McIntosh, and wide receiver Kevin Stephenson. Â Studstill also hails from the same high school as last year’s early enrollee linebacker Tevon Coney – one of the prime candidates to replace Jaylon Smith should the 2015 Butkus Award winner leave early for the NFL.
ND needs to continue recruiting the best of the best if they want to compete with the likes of Bama, Michigan, Oklahoma, and so many more. One or two big names doesn’t cut it they need many top notch players to attend ND. Let’s hope the best keep picking South Bend or else we will continue to be in the wedding party rather then the bride or groom. Go IRISH

• Kelly clarified last Saturday the need for senior cornerback KeiVarae Russell to be cleared by the NCAA to return in 2016. According to the head coach, the 2014 season might count toward his four seasons of eligibility as a year that was “taken away” by Notre Dame during his suspension.

Just read from a recruiting guru that with Hayes and Studstill as commits, ND rose from 18th to 3rd in the recruiting for 2016 athletes. Until they’re all signed, it’s still a wish-list, but if the jump was that dramatic, these last two must be considered something special!
Have to really appreciate their insight, effort, accomplishments and vision. Those in the ND program have secured great balance and depth. Positionally across the board is very strong. Having faith these young men can withstand all the rigors outside athletics too. It’s been a treat to watch the program build. Watching it sustain will be even better.. Thanks.
Teaching begins well before a player steps foot on campus; something we should all know well enough from Kelly. It took him six years to recruit and develop the talent and depth that he needed to run the offense he wanted to run. And for 4 of those years so many fans were calling for his head.
BVG is just rounding out his second season. His front 7 are doing great work, but his DB’s aren’t up to the task – specifically his safeties. For his scheme, he needs safeties that can think and respond like middle linebackers. And, it looks like that’s exactly what he’s recruiting. Too many high school DB’s come out with six basic coverages in their backpacks, which just isn’t terribly useful for BVG’s defense; or modern football for that matter. Looking at the highlights of his recruits, most have some similar traits. They make quick adjustments against passing alignments. They cover well inside and out. They have great instincts and vision. And, they pursue and tackle well all over the field. My guess is that a few years from now, the questions surrounding BVG’s DC ability will be as limited as Kelly’s HC ability today.
Love that they have verbals on 6 DB’s and hopefully more to come. Now, if we can find someone to teach them…
