Notre Dame Remains 5th in BCS
Notre Dame didn’t do much to earn style points this past weekend with a closer than expected win over BYU to improve to 7-0 on the season, but they apparently didn’t do enough to lose much ground either as they stayed steady at #5 in the latest BCS Standings.
While Notre Dame remained in 5th place in the standings, they did lose some ground with the computer polls. Last week Notre Dame was second in the eyes of the computers, but dropped a spot to 3rd in the composite computer rankings. The one spot drop in the computer polls though, wasn’t enough for the Irish to fall any positions in the overall rankings.
The second BCS rankings saw one change in the top 5 with Oregon and Kansas State swapping positions with the Ducks dropping spot to #4 even though they soundly beat Arizona State last Thursday. Kansas State was able to jump Oregon thanks to their own impressive victory over West Virginia.
Alabama and Florida remained 1st and 2nd in the BCS with Florida still getting the most love from the BCS computers. Florida faces #10 Georgia in Jacksonville, Alabama hosts #11 Mississippi State, Kansas State welcomes #14 Texas Tech to Manhattan, and Oregon welcomes Pac 12 whipping boy Colorado to Eugene.
With four of the top five BCS teams taking on top 15 opponents this weekend, next weekend’s top five could look quite different. With three other top 5 teams facing quality opponents, it could also be tougher for Notre Dame to impress voters even if they are able to get passed #8 Oklahoma in Norman Saturday night – something that will be much easier said than done.
Notre Dame opponents ranked in the BCS include this weekend’s opponent Oklahoma at #8, USC at #9, Stanford at #17, and Michigan at #22. Stanford still has to face top 10 foes Oregon and Oregon State meaning they could make Notre Dame’s victory a week ago look more or less impressive based on how they performance in both contests. Michigan, meanwhile, does not face another ranked opponent – although Ohio State is undefeated but not eligible for the BCS standings – the rest of the season.

At the beginning of the year I would’ve been dreaming to think that Notre Dame would be traveling to Oklahoma as the higher ranked team. It is even more incredible that it is a Top 10 match-up.
