Notre Dame has been able to survive a litany of injuries so far in 2015 and it looks like the Irish may have to employ the “next man in” mantra again after star running back CJ Prosise left today’s game in the first quarter with an undisclosed injury.

After converting a third down conversion on Notre Dame’s second drive of the game, CJ Prosise ran off the field favoring his shoulder.  Shortly after, he was seen running to the Notre Dame locker room and has yet to return to the game.

Following half-time, ABC/ESPN’s Todd McShay reported that he was unable to get an injury update on Prosise from Notre Dame and was told that there would not not be any until the end of the game.   Irish Illustrated has reported that Prosise has suffered a concussion as well as a potential shoulder injury.

Freshman Josh Adams has stepped in for Prosise and made his presence felt with 92 yards on 11 carries midway through the third quarter, but the Irish can ill afford to lose Prosise for any extended period of time to make a serious run at the playoffs.   Fellow freshman Dexter Williams has seen limited action as well but Adams has been the primary running back in Prosise absence.

If, and it’s a big if at this point, the main concern for Prosise is a concussion, Notre Dame could easily sit him next week at home against Wake Forest and be in fine shape.  If, however, there is a serious shoulder injury, Notre Dame could be dangerously thin at the running back position over the final quarter of the season.

Prior tio the injury, Prosise was off to a good start as well with 26 yards on five carries a week after being contained by the tough Temple defense.   Prosise had another 29 yards on 2 receptions as well.  Expect Brian Kelly to get plenty of questions about Prosise and his status in today’s post game presser.

  1. Meh. Not terribly concerned. Kelly never mentioned the word “concussion” although it’s certainly possible. Kelly said “it doesn’t look like it’s serious”. He had his shoulder driven into the ground. Doubtful that caused a concussion. If Prosise needs to be out a week or so, this is the perfect stretch of the season to be out. Great win for the Irish on the road. Kizer was absolutely magnificent. He was a couple inches away from having 7 or 8 TDs. The Pitt touchdown where they scooped and scored was garbage. Winbush is just getting his feet wet.

  2. Bummer for Procise.. Adams looked great. O-line good. Kizer hit a lot today. Got good protection too though.. O-line probably did better because Pitt bigger and slower. (Run blocking). Not to be an engrate. But D just can’t give up that many points. So much talent too. Hard to understand at times. Certainly wasn’t just Schmidt today. D-line had good pressure. Decent against run. Couldn’t corral QB though. I’ll thankfully take it. One more win.. Thanks.

  3. Adams is very impressive, however losing Prosise would be devastating. I still think its 50/50 Notre Dame wins out. Stanford will be very tough out there. Also, it pains me to say this, but Notre Dame’s defense is not good enough to slow down an Ohio State, Alabama, Tcu, Clemson Baylor, etc, if Notre Dame did make the playoffs
