Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa Ruled Out for Notre Dame’s Opener Against Wisconsin

Notre Dame will open the season without Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa. The junior linebacker was ruled out roughly an hour before kickoff against Wisconsin at Lambeau Field, closing the book on a week of speculation about whether he would be cleared.

The signs were there well before the announcement. Viliamu-Asa skipped pregame warmups with the linebackers, spending that stretch in sweats on the field, throwing a ball around with teammates and graduate assistants rather than going through position work.

He had been the only player listed as questionable on Notre Dame’s availability report this week. Everyone else on the two-deep is good to go.

Viliamu-Asa is working back from a torn left ACL suffered in the Senior Day win over Syracuse on November 22. It was the second time he has torn that ACL. His recovery has tracked ahead of schedule through camp, which is what put him on the questionable list rather than the ruled-out list in the first place. But there is a difference between being cleared and being ready, and the staff was never going to force that distinction in a Week 1 game the Irish are favored to win by three touchdowns.

Notre Dame has been down this road recently enough to know how it goes. Mitchell Evans tore his ACL against Pitt in October 2023, rehabbed all offseason, and was cleared for the 2024 opener at Texas A&M. He played, but only ten snaps, and the staff brought him along in careful increments through the early weeks rather than handing him his old workload back. It took most of the fall for him to look like himself again. He scored against Florida State in November and closed the regular season with five catches and a touchdown against USC, finishing with 43 catches across all 16 games on a team that reached the national championship.

That worked. It just took time. A player coming off a major knee injury needs a ramp, and the shape of that ramp matters more than whether he is technically available in Week 1. Notre Dame has 11 more regular season games and a Playoff run it spent the entire offseason preparing for. Pushing some whose torn an ACL twice onto field in early September against a Wisconsin team that won four games last year gets the Irish very little they need.

Viliamu-Asa is one of the most important pieces on this defense when healthy. He put up 48 tackles with an interception and a fumble recovery across 11 games last fall before the injury, and he is on most 2027 NFL Draft boards as a potential first-round pick.

In his place, Marcus Freeman leans on a linebacker group that can absorb the loss better than most. Drayk Bowen is a senior captain with 40 career games and 159 tackles over the last three seasons. Jaiden Ausberry, also a senior, has 107 tackles in two years. Jaylen Sneed and Madden Faraimo round out the rotation.

Notre Dame has enough at the position to handle one night without him. The question that matters is whether he is available when the schedule gets serious.
