The main camp note from Greg McElroy was simple: Notre Dame’s offense is holding up against its defense, which is not the usual August story. He said the Irish are one of the few teams where it sounds like “the offense has a day, the defense has a day,” and that the overall result through camp has been “a stalemate.” McElroy added that CJ Carr has the offense “looking sharp” against what could be the best defense Notre Dame sees all year.

That starts with Carr, who McElroy said is taking a step forward and looking comfortable with his receivers after posting a 4-to-1 TD-to-INT ratio and 66 percent completions last season. He also pointed to Matt Jeffery already working into the receiver rotation, and to progress from the backup quarterbacks even with Blake Hebert missing time for a personal matter. On defense, the big question is whether Notre Dame can generate enough pressure with four, because McElroy said Bryce Young is emerging, Boubacar Traore has been “a dominant force” in camp, and Keon Keeley looks like a solid third option.

  • McElroy said Greathouse “sounds like” he is bouncing back in camp.
  • The defensive line drew repeated rave reviews, especially Young and Traore off the edge.
  • Notre Dame’s ceiling, in his view, comes down to whether the Irish can rush without blitzing and keep seven in coverage.
  • McElroy called Notre Dame “a national title roster” and said fall camp is backing that up.
