Victor Abiamiri Impressing at the Senior Bowl

Victor Abiamiri has been turning in some impressive workouts during Senior Bowl practices this week.

From Rivals.com

“An AFC scout who said he paid particularly close attention to the defensive ends said he liked Nebraska’s Adam Carriker and Notre Dame’s Victor Abiamiri during the North practice Tuesday morning.”

ESPN Insider also reported on Monday that Abiamiri was turning some heads this week and could find his way into the late first round.

Abiamiri came to Notre Dame as the most highly touted defensive end in years, but never really reached the level of dominance most felt he could achieve.  He certainly had a good career with the Irish, but it was marred by inconsistency.  Most of Abiamiri’s best games came against rather weak competition – most notably Stanford.

The defensive coaching that Abiamiri got over the last four years most likely didn’t help much.  He played on defenses that didn’t exactly make it easy for a defensive end to dominant.  He does have all the physical to be a top line pass rusher in the NFL.  If my Eagles lose Juqua Thomas to free agency, I would love to see them grab Victor at the end of the first round and pair him with Jevon Kearse and Trent Cole.

  1. Nebraska…. Westbrook’s “whopping 1200 yards” came in 14 games and he had nearly 700 receiving yards on top of those 1200 rushing yards. Play makers on offense are NOT the problem. The Eagles were #2 in total offense this season but were terrible against the run.

Word in Philly is that Howard could cut this off-season because he was a complete bust. If Howard is cut and Thomas leaves in free agency, the Birds will need a DE on the first day of the draft.

I agree on the LB’s, but unfortunately this is a very weak class of linebackers coming into the draft this year.

  2. say it loud! a bruising back would be great, but the linebacking core is pretty sad. Trotter’s great, but he can’t have more than a couple seasons left at that level. we need bodies and talent.

  3. Don’t your Eagles have Darren Howard at the other DE spot from Kearse? In any event, your Eagles don’t need another defensive player: they need more playmakers on offense. Reggie Brown, Donte’ Stallworth (who is a free agent that you DO NOT want back), and Brian Westbrook’s whopping 1200 rushing yards (in the one season that he actually stayed healthy) aren’t nearly enough. Take whichever of the WRs that drops (likely Sidney Rice) at #1, and find a better RB than a guy who would have been pretty good had he not torn up his knees 4 times (Correll Buckhalter) to back up Westbrook in either the 2nd or 3rd round. The Eagles seem to think that if they keep loading up on OLs then it doesn’t matter who the skill players are; even if all those OLs panned out (and they don’t) it still isn’t true. Oh yeah, and if you are going to talk about defense, your need at LB far outweighs your needs at DL anyway. Dhani Jones? Omar Gaither? Matt McCoy? Chris Gocong? And you KNOW that Jeremiah Trotter (speaking of shredded knees) won’t play forever!
