Notre Dame Offers Devon Carrington (S)

Notre Dame will need to sign at least two safeties in the class of 2010 and on St. Patrick’s Day, the Irish offered one of the nation’s best at the position.  Devon Carrington, an Arizona native, was offered a scholarship by Notre Dame according to ESPN.  Carrington’s offer from Notre Dame is his first offer from outside the West Coast after previously collecting offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, and Stanford.

This past season, Carrington recorded 77 tackles and 4 sacks, intercepted 2 passes, recovered 3 fumbles, and blocked 2 field goal as a junior.

Carrington is on ESPN’s Top 150 Watch list and is considered to be an up and coming prospect.  Here’s a little background info on Carrington from his ESPN profile.

He has good size and is physically intimidating by the way he plays the game. Comes up from the safety position on run support with good leverage on the football either from the strong or free safety position. Able to shed or avoid blockers in getting to the football. Likes to punish the ball carrier when given a clean shot but must be careful to not put the head down or leave his feet too early when making the tackle. An aggressive football player on the defensive side of the ball that possesses good speed and quickness. Breaks well on the pass whether in two or three deep coverage.

Not a whole lot that doesn’t sound very, very promising in there although I’m not sure I agree about the good size comment if Carrington’s listed size of 5’11”, 180 is accurate – that seems a bit on the small side.  His size is really the only thing not to be very excited about though.

Carrington comes from the same high school which produced Gerrell Robinson – another defensive back Notre Dame recruited two seasons ago.  Robinson came close to selecting Notre Dame, but ended up at Arizona State.  Steve Belles, a former back-up quarterback for Notre Dame, being Carrington’s head coach at Hamilton HS in Chandler, Arizona can only help our chances.

Sounds like a very promising player. Especially for a serious position of need.
