One of Notre Dame’s top remaining targets, offensive tackle Matt James, reduced his list of schools to three by eliminating Florida today with Notre Dame, Cincinnati, and Ohio State still alive. James, a Rivals Top 100 recruit, is set to visit Notre Dame at the end of the month.

Mike Dyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer tweeted Thursday that, “St. Xavier senior OL Matt James is no longer considering Florida.” This came just seven hours after a previous tweet said, “As I reported before, St. Xavier senior OL Matt James plans to take official visit to Florida this weekend”.

It’s not known what caused the change from James visiting Florida to eliminating them, but the Gators loss could be Notre Dame’s gain. James and Seantrel Henderson are the top two tackle prospects on the board for Notre Dame. The Irish are in desperate need for offensive linemen at this point too with just one lineman, Christian Lombard, currently committed.

James will visit Cincinnati this weekend and will finish his visits with a trip to South Bend the weekend of the 29th. He previously visited Ohio State in December

I think he’s going ND. Ohio kids that grow up Buckeye fans usually do end up in Columbus, but Cincinnati is not as strong of a Buckeye outpost because of its own university, pro teams, and focus on high school sports. The Greater Catholic League has been a very strong ND pipeline in recent years (Rudolph, Hendrix) and historically.

The Florida news is really no big deal. Everyone knows this is coming down to Ohio State and ND on signing day. It seems to be too big of a task to get this kid but we at least have a shot. The Ohio kids that grow up Luckeye fans almost always go to Columbus.

Would be awesome if we could get his committment. With ND being his last visit, and being so close to signing day, I could see him committing after that visit. Hopefully it is to ND.
