Torii Hunter Jr Commits to Notre Dame

Notre Dame saw some early returns from its prime time win over Michigan this weekend when 4-star wide receiver Torii Hunter Jr. committed to the Irish on his official visit.  The son of MLB star Torii Hunter, became the 21st commitment for the Irish in this year’s class and the 4th at the wide receiver position.

The younger Hunter let the world know of his college decision on Twitter earlier today with word quickly spreading.  “Proud to be part of #Irishmob13 Go Irish.!!” (Note: I tried to use the cool embed feature like below but this tweet did not want to cooperate).

Hunter’s father, Anaheim Angels outfielder Torii Hunter, was quick to post a congratulatory message for his son on Twitter as well as he and the Angels were in California hosting the White Sox

Hunter’s commitment gives the Irish another 4-star commitment in the form of ESPN.com’s #50 overall rated recruit and #8 rated wide receiver.  Rivals and 247Sports both rate Hunter as a 4-star prospect with 247 ranking him 91st overall nationally regardless of postion while Scout has him currently listed as a 3-star prospect.

An impressive performance at Nike’s “The Opening” gave Hutner’s stock a rise this off-season similarly to how fellow wide receiver commitment Corey Robinson saw his stock rise thanks to strong showings at various camps.  Like Hunter, Robinson too has a famous athlete for a father – NBA Hall of Famer David Robison.

In Hunter Notre Dame is adding a wide receiver tailor made for the spread offense.  He runs great routes, shows a good burst off the line, and can play inside or out making him a very versatile athlete to add to Notre Dame’s wide receiver corps.  Hunter compliments Notre Dame’s other wide receiver commitments – James Onwualu, William Fuller, and Robinson very well.

He selected Notre Dame with offers from Arkansas, Arizona State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and West Virginia among others.

With Hunter in the fold, Notre Dame has very few spots remaining in this year’s class and is most likely done recruiting on the offensive side of the ball with four wide receivers, five offensive linemen, a tight end, a running back, and a quarterback all in the fold.  With only a handful of scholarships available look for Notre Dame to be very selective over the next few months – especially if the Irish continue to win.

And the best part of this commitment?  Notre Dame is going to end the month of September with a perfect 4-0 record and 21 verbal commitments.  Contrast that to where the Irish were a year ago and it’s going to be hard not to go into the office tomorrow with a smile on your face even if there are still questions with the Irish offense.  More on that later though.
