Notre Dame Star Offensive Recruits Make Moves in Rivals100

Notre Dame’s star offensive players in the class of 2020 made some moves in the latest update of the Rivals100. Chris Tyree, Tosh Baker, and Michael Mayer all saw significant jumps while star wide receiver Jordan Johnson held steady with his 4-star status.  The Fighting Irish still have five players in total in the top 100 overall.

Chris Tyree Jumps 24 Sports, Regains Composite 5th Star

The biggest mover in the new Rivals100 is speedy running back Chris Tyree.  After winning the fastest man competition at The Opening with a 4.37 electronically timed 40-yard dash, Tyree jumped up 24 spots from 64th to 40th overall in the Rivals rankings.  That has him on the cusp of 5-star status from Rivals.

The move, however, was enough for Tyree to regain his 5-star in the 247Sports Composite rankings.  That means that Notre Dame currently has a 5-star wide receiver and a 5-star running back in the composite rankings.  Since these services have existed, that has never happened for Notre Dame.

Watch for Tyree to continue to move up the rankings this fall.

Jordan Johnson Keeps 5-star Status

Speaking of Johnson, he dropped slightly to #21 overall while still retaining his 5-star status.  If that status stands, he will be the first 5-star wide receiver to sign with Notre Dame since Michael Floyd in the class of 2008.  Rivals recently described him as having the highest floor of any of the other 5-star receivers in the country.

Johnson only reached 5-star status in Rivals’s spring update.  With a strong senior season, he could see his overall ranking move back into the top 20 overall.

Michael Mayer’s Stock Rises After the Opening

Another big mover in the rankings is tight end Michael Mayer.  Mayer put on a damn clinic at The Opening, earning MVP honors in the process.  With his strong performance, he moved up 13 spots from 71st to 58th.  That movement has just outside the top 50 in the 247 Sports Composite rankings as well.

Only two other tight ends are currently ranked higher than Mayer in the Rivals100.  He ha been rising in the rankings for a while now jumping from #205 in September to #126 in March to #71 in June before moving up again.

Tosh Baker Makes Modest Move

Tosh Baker moved up a solid seven spots to #44 overall after checking in at #51 in the last two iterations of the Rivals100.  Before that, Baker wasn’t even ranked in the top 250 by Rivals.

Drew Pyne Clinging to Top 100 Spot

The only bit of bad news in the rankings for Notre Dame was for quarterback Drew Pyne.  He is clinging to his spot in the Rivals100 by a thread at this point at #100 overall.  Evaluations of Pyne have been a bit mixed, but the general consensus seems to be that if he had a bigger arm, he’d be much higher in everyone’s rankings.

Pyne performed well at the 5-star Challenge in July, but his rankings decline has been steady for a while now.  After debuting at #37 overall in September, he dropped to #56 in January, then #72 in March, and then #82 in June before reaching the last spot in the Rivals100 today.

It will be tough for Pyne to move up in the rankings again playing in Connecticut and at this point looks like he’ll likely end up outside the Rivsals100 before the final rankings are released.
