Notre Dame Fall Camp ’14 – Day 2 Video
Notre Dame was back on the practice field on Tuesday for the second day of the 2014 fall camp at Culver Academy. Notre Dame was again in just helmets per NCAA rules. Here’s a video from practice that was posted by WatchND to YouTube along with some notes and observations.
In case you missed it, we had video from day one of camp yesterday, along with initial comments from both Notre Dame head caoch Brian Kelly and new defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder.
- One that has stood out the last two days is that despite the lack of contact possible due to just wearing helmets, you can notice the difference in the corner play. The corners in practice the last two days have been very physical at the line – something that was expected in VanGorder’s scheme.
- It is a lot of fun watching Corey Robinson work the sideline. All through the spring and the last two days he’s made a couple nice catches displaying great body control on the sideline. We profiled Robinson as a breakout candidate on Tuesday and so far he’s looked good.
- Justin Brent burned fellow freshman Nick Watkins for a deep ball and was seen a number of times making plays in the clip from today.
- It’s easy to see why there’s been a lot of buzz about Durham Smythe. He certainly looks the part of a great receiving threat right now.
- The only interception shown in the video came off the arm of Malik Zaire and into the hands of Eliar Hardy.

Loved the throws I’m seeing from both QBs. No rubber ran Tommy Rees passes this year. We are loaded at receiver and our RBs are very good and we are deep at those positions. We will score 38 a game this year.
Everett looks good, 2 days in a row…I am liking the quick release as well as the quick feet. He could be just what the doctor ordered for this offense. Go IRISH!
#11 Brent’s route on Watkins was impressive. Very well ran route, explosive in and out of the breaks. Very nice.
Honestly, this offense should put up 35 per fame, ATLEAST.me this o-line should be nothing short of dominant and I really don’t think I’m being a “homer” when I say this is the best speed/athleticism depth ND has had at skill positions since what, the 80’s? BK’s offense needs to click this year to give the D a year to grow under BVG’s scheme. 28 per game isn’t enough In this crazy mind. 🙂
I hope this offense can put up an average of about 28 points a game. The defense will need to grow and the front seven should have growing pains.
The offense put up 27.2 ppg last year and was 75th in the country. Let’s aim a little higher.
In 2012 they averaged 26.7 PPG and were 12-0. Granted, the defense was incredible and we had a couple very lucky breaks along the way. Obviously, the more points the better. But as always, defense wins games.
Also in 2012, ND’s turnover margin was a plus +1 per game.
Good enough for 22nd in the nation.
Will having a different QB, and a more aggressive defense, get us on the plus side of the turnover battle again this year?
I’m sorry than 34 a game. Take away the shit teams they played and the would have averaged 24 a game
Which is true of pretty much any team in the nation. Discount the higher scores versus the “lesser” teams on the schedule, hence your average PPG goes down. Point?
The receivers look quick, sure of themselves & their routes. Can’t help compliment that even though it’s still realllllll early.
