Highlights from Notre Dame’s Streak Snapping Blowout of Stanford

Notre Dame won in Stanford Stadium yesterday for the first time in a decade.  The Irish fell behind early against an undermanned and overmatched Stanford team that played like yesterday was their bowl game – since the Cardinal had no chance of attaining bowl eligibility even with a win yesterday.  Ultimately though, the Irish prevailed and even pulled off a fun back-door cover for a comfortable 45-24 win snapping a streak of five straight losses on the farm and giving Brian Kelly his first ever win in Palo Alto.

As always, we start with the highlights here and will be posting more throughout the day.

  1. We have all been discussing Notredames lack of a great running game seeing how we recruit highly rated lineman every year.Is the problem scheme blocking principles and techniques coaching the running backs or all of the above. I think one of the things that hurts Notredame is Kelly has never recruited a back with great speed Hopefully Tyree is that guy.Prosise Dexter William’s and Josh Adam’s were all explosive and fast but only going North and South. They ripped off 80 yard runs up the middle or off tackle only. As an example of what I’m talking about in the second quarter yesterday Notredame ran an outside stretch play with Tony Jones.Notredame blocked the play very well but Jones wasn’t fast enough to get the corner and only gained 2 yards. Earlier Ohio State ran the exact same play and Dobbins gained 14 yards because his great speed beat the linebacker and corner to the perimeter. Also when you have great speed like this it opens up running between the tackles and up the middle because it forces the defensive line to play wider..
