Notre Dame picked up another commitment for the recruiting class of 2014 on Friday in the form of 4-star cornerback Nick Watkins giving Notre Dame it’s first commitment in the defensive backfield for the #GoldenArmy14.

Prior to committing to Notre Dame, Nick Watkins picked up offers from many of the elite programs in the country such as Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Stanford, and Texas among others.  With an offer list like that, it is easy to see why Watkins is a consensus 4-star recruit and included in Rivals’ Top 250 overall prospects (ranked #160 overall and #11 ranked CB).

Not only is Watkins and elite athlete, he also fits the mold of what Notre Dame looks for in it’s corners – long, lean corners that can run.  At 6’1″, 180 lbs with great speed, Watkins easily fits the bill.

Watkins is the second commitment in the class from the state of Texas as well joining Grant Blankenship continuing a revival in recruiting in the Lone Star State that the Notre Dame staff has started over the last few seasons.   Last year the Irish added Torii Hunter, Corey Robinson, and Durham Smythe from Texas.

This year, Watkins is the first commitment in the defensive backfield – an area of this class that is likely to be a focus of the class by the Irish staff over the final few months leading up to Signing Day.  That focus may even shift to Watkins’s high school teammate Payton Hendrix – a 3-star safety with offers from Nebraska, North Carolina, and Washington.

Watkins is the first commitment for Notre Dame to come out of the big recruiting two weeks ago when arch-rival USC came to town although many more are expected to join the fold in the coming weeks.

  1. Wow! Graceful, powerful speed. Obviously faster than he appears which means he is really fast. Also looks strong and powerful. He looks great at either position.
