The stakes

This is the 80th meeting in the series and the first since 2017, when the Irish won 38-18 in East Lansing. Notre Dame leads the all-time series 49-29-1. Michigan State’s last win in South Bend came in 2016, a 36-28 decision, and this season falls 60 years after the 1966 game that ended in a 10-10 tie with both schools claiming a share of the national title.

Michigan State is 2-0 in Pat Fitzgerald’s first season, with wins over Toledo and Eastern Michigan. Notre Dame has outscored Wisconsin and Rice by a combined 93-13 and has not allowed a point since the first half of the opener.
