Notre Dame and Stanford played one of the most entertaining games of the 2015 college football season last night – yet another game for the ages between the two programs. Unfortunately for the Irish, they came up on the wrong side of this year’s thriller with Stanford kicking the game winning field goal as time expired after the Irish took the lead with just 0:30 left in the game.
We’ll have plenty on Notre Dame’s second two-point loss of the season, but as always, until then, here are the highlights from WatchND.

I hate to say it, but, a Lot of Georgia fans forewarned us that BVG was Not Good. When BVG was at Ga he had a lot of talent but he has a tendency to have the kids think too much instead of allowing them to react. I’ve seen bad defenses, but, ND has been having too many mental lapses in crucial stages of each game. Also, who is coaching the LBs??? Ever heard of gap responsibility???? Again, Rudy Joe performance was subpar. He just does not have the speed…
Unfortunately, Kelly and VanGorder have a history together, so i don’t think he’ll be firing him anytime soon. However, did anyone else notice how impassive Kelly appeared when ND’s x-fense was on the field? It was (hopefully) BK saying…”I’m not getting involved with this X-fensive scheme. It’s all on you BVG.” Could there have been a discussion of BVG’s ‘stepping aside’ on his ‘own volition’ for another shot at the pros? One could only hope.
To paraphrase Bruce J. (above) now under BVG, we have worthy opponents in Wake, Temple and UMass…
@ Robbie Rob…not only can he not win the “big game”, he’ll put it off on someone else. He’s never lost a big game…just ask him.

Outcoached, outplayed, and out prepared by a lesser talented team and better coaching staff. David Shaw and his staff do more with less than any other staff in college football.
A season with more positives than negatives. Thanks to many on the team, especially seniors, who gave much to help ND to a 10-2 regular season. Now the regular season is done. Get prepared for your bowl opponent and play with an attitude to knock the snot out of them, no matter who they are. Full steam ahead Irish, the future can be as bright AS YOU MAKE IT!
LAST NIGHT, OUR COACHING STAFF BLEW THE GAME. 3 TRIPS INTO THE REDZONE FOR 9 POINTS.IF THEY HAD SCORED 1 T.D., GAME OVER. KELLY HAD ALL YEAR TO FIX THIS PROBLEM.ON. STANFORDS LAST DRIVE VAN GORDER RUSHED 3 GUYS. PREVENT DEFENSE ALWAYS RESULTS IN PREVENTING YOU FROM WINNING. BILL PARCELLS SAID THAT YEARS AGO. VAN GORDER SHOULD HAVE PUT PRESSURE ON HOGAN. A GOOD Q.B. WILL ALWAYS FIND SOMEONE OPEN NO MATTER HOW MANY GUYS ARE DEFENDING, IF HE HAS ALL DAY TO THROW. HORRIBLE COACHING, AGAIN. KELLY CANNOT WIN THE BIG GAME.
Robert B, Boston College exposed how vulnerable an inexperienced qb can be to RZ defenses. It was apparent that the ND brain trust told Kizer if it ain’t there, get rid of it. And he wasn’t going to be allowed to improvise, and risk a fumble or pic. Make the RZ package simple and straightforward, settle for the FG if need be…..
Good post, Alley Cat. A loss to No. 1 Clemson in the last seconds, with a qb making his first start. No dishonor in that. Bama lost at home, to give some perspective, so this season wasn’t what was wanted, but it was a good one anyway. Issues need to be addressed, as with all teams, but the point is no blowout losses, competitive throughout the season, despite losing key starters and raft of injuries….
They lost on a dumb penalty ( face mask ) . You’d think that those kids would have it drummed into their thick skulls that penalties COST games. Something is amiss with the ND coaching approach & philosophy. Every year there is an achilles heal that just repeats all season long – too many interceptions/fumbles last year, now they can’t catch & hold onto the football and can’t score inside the red zone – and these problems were recurring game after game. A shame cause otherwise they had a great team – but those kids gave up the game and season- Stanford didn’t win it – same with Clemson. Now they have to live with that fact the rest of their lives. Someone needs to dress down Kelly – take him to the woodshed or something. No excuses !!
RZ Offense is too predictable, we never run any kind of misdirection plays. Maybe try what Stanford did roll right and throw back left, it was wide open for them, maybe it can work for us. N.D. has to many weapons on offense to keep settling for FG’S. They need to rethink their play calling.
It’s curious as to why the Irish couldn’t play defense (even for 30 seconds at the end of the game) and why they can’t shake the turnover and red zone demons that continue to haunt them. The red zone issues can be solved with better play selection, better preparation, eliminating turnovers and penalties. The D, however, is something that cannot and will not be fixed overnight. This team does not seem comfortable with the defensive system. Still, let’s not forget that they were very close to a 12-0 season. This program is clearly going in the right direction.

The defense finally did in ND. The problems went unattended because they were still in the playoff hunt.BK and BVG could have been proactive but chose not to address the issues that kept manifesting themselves week after week.
Generate 533 yards of offense against Stanford and walk away with a loss just stings as a fan. A win in a meaningful bowl ( I guess if you can say that) would be a good spring board for 2016.

They will never win a national championship with Brian Kelley. What kind of coach keeps bvg for two seasons and let’s him give up on avg 28 points a game. He is an 8-5 coach every season. They won two or three games with last minute heroics from fuller where they were outplayed. The schedule now features temple, wake forest, and u mass as worthy opponents. It’s central or is it western Michigan football at its very best. It’s no longer notre dame football.
