Podcast: Has Notre Dame Upgraded It’s Coaching Staff So Far and How Do They Finish It Off?
Frank and Greg are back this week to talk through the latest developments with the Notre Dame coaching staff as Marcus Freeman works on finishing off his first staff as the head coach at Notre Dame. The lads discuss:
- Has Notre Dame improved overall with the four hires so far?
- Thoughts on the departure for Lance Taylor and how the DC hire could impact the profile Notre Dame looks for at RB coach
- Why Frank is a big fan of Doug Belk for the next DC
- Should Freeman be more hands-on with the defense moving forward and how that impacts the DC search
- The wide receiver room because of course we have to discuss it until Notre Dame adds help
- Q&A
How much fun was Notre Dame football in 2021?
We discussed this tweet thanks to a question from our friend Ryan from Her Loyal Sons as well.

I have deep concerns about a head coach at ND that has never ever been a head coach.
This job used to be the top rung on the ladder…not the bottom one.
But Swarbrick made that call, and it is what it is.
Best way to mitigate the extra risk of the situation is to compensate with exceptional staff.
Anything out of Saban’s pantry of ex-HC’s would be great to have.
Good as he is at his job, Tommy Rees does not have the experience to be considered a “2IC”.
Hiestand might be more important for his years of coaching experience than for his coaching ability.
At this point, I think ND fans should be as nervous as a cat in roomfull of rocking chairs. But they are nothing if not a wildly optimistic bunch.
That bastard Kelly is gone….and no matter how uncertain it is, ND’s football future finally holds possibility.
Freeman needs to demonstrate a sideline personality. He was way too passive at the Fiesta. He had that look all game, overwhelmed. If that’s it for him, then next season starts and ends with game one.
I think the key is hitting big on these assistant coaches. The assistants play a big role in the success of a program. Look at how good Clemson,Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia assistant coaches are as both recruiters and developers utilizing talent. So much of coaching is preparation game planning in game adjustments on the fly etc. My take is Freeman has to do more than anything else something Brian Kelly never did and that is recruit and develop every year a Heisman trophy level quarterback. Yes you have to have great players all over the field to compete and win national championships but you better have a high level quarterback. Look at Tampa Bay. Brady replaces Winston. They go from 8 and 8 to winning the super bowl with basically the same talent. I would have liked to have seen Buchner play in the second half of the bowl game. I think the experience would have been invaluable for him regardless if Notredame would have won or not. Also, I think the receivers and oline will be much better with Heistand and Stuckey. Del and Quinn were not very good imo.
