Notre Dame Football Film Review: Ian Book Takes Big Steps Against Bowling Green

Last week I wrote a piece detailing the missed opportunities in the Notre Dame passing game. The premise of the piece was the issues with Ian Book were decision making related, and not throwing related. As in, when he lets ...

Notre Dame Passes Bowling Green Test with Flying Colors

I usually give out grades position by position following every game, but this week let’s not pretend it’s anything other than A’s all around. Notre Dame outgained their opponent by just under 350 yards, averaged 9.4 yards per play to ...

Notre Dame Football: Revisiting the Pain of the Brian VanGorder Experience

You know how when you want closure from something traumatic, and the final step in moving on is reliving and laughing about it? Well, this is what I hope to do today. Think of the Brian VanGorder era as an ...

Notre Dame Football Stock Report: Jones, Linebackers Trending Up

To show how influential this column is, last week the Notre Dame run game was listed on the trending down track. Then they rushed for four touchdowns and bludgeoned the Cavaliers in the fourth quarter, so clearly, the coaching staff ...

How Notre Dame Can Get More Explosiveness Out Of The Passing Game

During his weekly Monday press conference, head coach Brian Kelly was asked about the progress of quarterback Ian Book. Kelly talked about Book having made improvements in some areas, needing to make more improvements in others. He then finished his ...

Grading The Notre Dame Defense Against Virginia: Hint, They Passed!

Clark Lea came into this game feeling like Notre Dame could handle the Virginia passing game playing man coverage. This was not the correct feeling. It had less to do with the scheme being faulty, and more to do with ...

Grading Notre Dame’s Uneven Offensive Performance Vs. Virginia

As will become the norm in this space from now on, I’ll start by talking about the performance of the coordinator. Much like the offense as a whole, Chip Long was a little bit all over the place in terms ...

Notre Dame Football Stock Report: A Young CB Rising, Run Game Falling

I have been thinking all week how weird it was that it’s week four and I don’t know how good Notre Dame is at football. I know how good they can be. Georgia showed us that. I also know how inconsistent they ...

Notre Dame Football: Grading The Irish Defense Vs. Georgia

Remember the offseason of 2018 when the news dropped that Mike Elko was leaving for Texas A&M? The panic that ensued? The general feeling was the best part of the Notre Dame rebuild–Elko and his defense–had just walked out the ...

Notre Dame Football: Grading the Irish Offense Vs. Georgia

Before we get into the individual units here, a word on the game plan offensive coordinator Chip Long put together seems appropriate. Long came into this game with one hand tied behind his back. Without a realistic threat of a ...

Notre Dame Earns More Respect, Loses Another Big One

So close, yet so far away. I, for one, did not predict that Notre Dame would have the ball at the Georgia 38 with a first down and just over a minute left, a touchdown away from winning the game. ...

Notre Dame Stock Report: Bramblett, McKinley Rising; Run Game Falling

First, the good news. Notre Dame has had some surprise contributions so far this year that paired with strong play from the veterans can make for an excellent team! The bad news is the veterans are the ones who need ...

Grading Notre Dame’s Defensive Performance Against New Mexico

Earlier today I graded the offense, rather harshly, and now will be the defense, plus I’m going in on the Sky Cam. Judging how the defense played against such a bad opponent is tough because every positive play from New ...

Grading Notre Dame’s Offensive Performance Against New Mexico

So to be clear, 59 offensive points is excellent. I’m not just going to ignore the offense scoring eight touchdowns in a football game, against whoever. It doesn’t happen very often, and it’s a good thing. Some of the grades ...
